- Dey Ain't Gonna' Scare Me| 4 repliesThis guy (Al Ledbury) calls and says he is an attorney (Sure you are, Al)and says that he is from the Cambece Law Office in Boston. He wants to talk to me about a relative. He won't say what the call is about. Well, then, he doesn't get any information about me. Looking up the company and phone number shows that they in the business of debt collection and treat people very badly and disregard the debt collection laws. Be careful!

Debt collectors to pay $75,000 settlement
Peabody law firm also to implement new procedures
By Michael Rezendes, Globe Staff | November 1, 2006
After a two-year investigation based on more than 100 complaints, a Peabody debt-collection law firm will pay $75,000 and implement procedures to protect indebted consumers under an agreement unveiled yesterday by the state attorney general's office.
Thomas F. Reilly, the attorney general, alleged that representatives of the J.A. Cambece Law Office PC violated state and federal debt-collection laws by using profane language, placing calls to consumers at improper hours, making unauthorized communications with consumers at their places of employment, and failing to provide proof of the validity of debts.
The settlement "imposes restrictions on this firm to protect consumers from abusive practices," Reilly said in a prepared statement. "It also sends a message to the collection industry that abusive tactics will not be tolerated."
In August, the Globe reported that Cambece was being investigated by the attorney general's office. At the time, Nancy Sterling, a spokeswoman for the firm, said the investigation was "based on a small number of complaints."
A Globe Spotlight series in July and August revealed widespread abuses in the debt-collection industry, but the series did not focus on Cambece.
Under the agreement, filed yesterday in Suffolk Superior Court, Cambece assented to a variety of procedures designed to protect debtors. These include recording all telephone conversations with consumers, providing proof of debt -- including at least two monthly statements from the original creditor -- and appointing a supervisor to oversee compliance with state and federal laws.
The settlement also requires Cambece to pay $20,000 in restitution to consumers, $45,000 to a consumer aid fund managed by the attorney general's office, and $10,000 to cover the cost of the state's investigation.
In his statement, Reilly said Cambece cooperated with the investigation. But the firm denies it violated any laws.
"There's no finding by any court that Cambece broke any state or federal law," said Sterling, the spokeswoman for the firm.
The filing "simply confirms a voluntary agreement between the Cambece law firm and the attorney general's office. No enforcement action was filed against the law firm, and no fines or penalties were paid."

- Drowning replies to Dey Ain't Gonna' Scare Me| 2 repliesThe Cambece Law also uses 1-866-200-9398 and 978-826-1040. These people do not do things by the book, they have not notified me in writting, which I believe they are suppose to and they called my at 7:30 am, I also believe that is a violation of the Fair Debt Collection Practices. I filed a complaint with the FTC, and will continue to file complaints each time they do something wrong. I will not lay down and roll over.
- Paul| 1 replyI hold power of attorney for my brother a one hundred percent disabled veteran. He is severely emotionally disturbed. Due to his condition he has acuminated a number of large debts because of his mental disability to remember which renders him irresponsible and unreliable. By the time I learned what his condition had done to him he almost lost his home. A credit card company put a lean on his property two years ago. I just learned about this, this past October. Last week I received a phone call from the office James Anthony Cambece the representative is a man named Dan Machado the problem is all our sources of help have been exhausted the lean placed a 12% interest on the lean which means every year the interest adds another four hundred plus to the balance. What should I do? Paul

Your brother dose not have to pay them anything. The members of debtorboards will help you. They will ask what state you live in, when your brother was declared incompetent. Dose your brother have a public guardian.

- jjgThis is a racket, it used to be called extortion! These people will attempt to go around the law when ever they can. I have received calls from four or five different debt collectors, I request by certified mail that they no loner contact me by phone and to all the relevant information regarding the debt, including the original crediter, the original account number, names and addresses of all agencies that have handled the account and the bar id's of any and all attorneys involved. I never here from them again, but another agency calls with the same tactics. They buy old debts for #.16 on the dollar and they never stop. I have contacted my attorney General's consumer complaint line and was told to write another letter and make formal complaint with her office.
These things may not be illegal, but they sure are unethical and the lawyers involved should be disbarred, but the have money and went to law school with the bar council. (Sorry just assuming that)- Caller: Law office of James Anthony Cambece

The guy said he was calling from Anthony Cambece's office and was has been unable to reach the woman and asked me to ask her to call him. He said he used software to find me as her closest neighbor.

- loggerhead replies to kristinThat type of call (a communication with someone who is not responsible for a debt about another person's debt) is strictly illegal under Massachusetts law. If you like your neighbor (or even if you just have no reason to dislike her) tell her about the call and offer to testify in court if necessary. Then tell her to call a lawyer immediately. If you live in a state other than Massachusetts, have her check the law in whichever state that is,
- no sayThey having been calling for months. I explained I was dx with cancer, no insurance and had no assets or ability to pay them. They keep calling and drilling me even as I am crying on the phone. Have asked me for information that is none of their business (and if they know so much they would already have this info). I am sending the cease letter and if they continue to call I will file a complaint. Complete [***] with no compassion..........Remember karma Cambece, it will come back around to you......
- Calls at WorkI received a call from Cambece Law Group at home and work. It is illegal to call a persons job about a debt. I am not sure what this debt is for because when they leave a message they never say what it is for. I am in a financial hardship and is unable to pay a few of my debts back. I have never received a letter from the law group at all. I am going to send them a cease and desist letter to stop all calls. If they need to send anything they need to send it by mail.

I haven't told my mom so as not to scare her, but from everything I'm reading they sound shady. It sounds like now that they have my cell number they won't be afraid to use it. Should I ignore their calls AND send them a cease and desist letter? Any advice is appreciated, thanks.
