Called me in california saying my daughter in Washington had a "formal complaint" filed against her. Told me they could not give me info. Then called my sisters cell phone (how they got her number I will never know). I called the number back after work and the mailbox is full can't leave a message. I don't understand why they would call me because my daughter and I haven't spoken in about 4 years

Criminals masquerading as debt collectors attempt to extort money from people by scaring you into believing that you will be criminally charged (they use the bad check or hot check claim a lot) and go to jail, lose your driver’s license, have wages garnished without actually being sued or going to court, be sued, and a variety of other variations on this, all for an alleged or nonexistent debt.  One of the tricks they use is to call your family, friends, neighbors and/or places of employment (past or present or both) to create panic and embarrassment so that their intended victim calls them and they can scare that person into paying their extortion money.  They will use the words “Mediator”, “Arbitrator”, or “Law Office” to make you believe that they are something other than a debt collector want-a-be and that they don’t have to follow Federal and State collection laws.  They do have to follow those laws, but they won’t.  They mention that they have received a Fax document, to create the sense of urgency.  They also tell you that if you fail to call them back you are "waiving your right to council", which is pretty much nothing but hogwash.  They also use the “process server” ruse who calls and claims he is going to serve you, but then says you could avoid it by calling another number where they will ask for money to “make it go away” (this is actually the same place, they work in teams, one pretending to be the server, and the other usually pretends to be a lawyer).  Process servers do not ever call ahead so that you can dodge them.  Process servers get paid to serve papers, nothing else.

You should visit the following two sites and read up, as well as report this criminal activity.

Read up on your rights here and also make a complaint at this government site:  http://www.consumerfinance.gov/

Also file a complaint with your State Attorney General's office.

It is a debt collection scam.  Do yourself a favor and read the other posts in the thread.  Then you will learn both what the scam is about, but what you should know to keep from becoming a victim.

Attempting to collect a payday loan from me.  I have never had a payday loan, I don't live at the address they have, never worked where they claim employment was verified and don't have the email address they claim I used.  In other words, it's NOT ME.

I have requested a written verification of the debt, they refused saying all the documents were sent to the address I have never lived at.  I believe it is all a scam, they also called one of my daughters threatening her mother with prison for fraud.  I have notified the state attorney's office but they will disappear tomorrow and open shop the next day somewhere else.

Called my son in Arkansas and I live in another state. Saying a complaint has been filed. I called the number 866-204-0462 and I have no clue as to what they were talking about. As the previous statement mentioned, process servers don't call ahead. Scams!

They called my daughter saying that my ex husband (who was her step-father) had a complaint filed against him.  He and I have been divorced for 6 years, he is remarried and lives in another state.  How they got my daughter's number, I will never know as the two of them have never been related except by marriage.

They called me from this number, refused to send me any info and just kept talking about legal action. Plus this issue was so past the statues of limitations, I don't even know why they are attempting. I play their game, since they do not want to send me any proof, lets go to court and you can show me and the judge the proof. I ve gotten these calls before and I always tell them see you in court. I have yet to get any thing from the courts. I check my credit report monthy and it is correct. I filed a complaint with the Federal and State agencies. I know people do not warn you before serving you papers for court. If this debt was that bad it would be on my credit report. Plus they were calling my relatives like I am that hard to find. I am the easy person to find it is not hard. They are a scam, just shut them down if they call.

These are scammers.  Like most scammers, they are off-shore and buy US Phone #s that are forwarded to them from legit scamming companies like https://www.globalcallforwarding.com/.  These scammers say they are located in Charleston, SC and are a "litigation company" but these are uneducated third world idiots whose sole purpose is to scam you out of money by scaring you into thinking a loved one is about to be filed against for a debt they owe.

Here's the good news: without being specific, I assure you all traffic to and from globalcallforwarding.com is traced and accounts are in the possession of the US intelligence agencies as well as Interpol.  These are actively being pursued.  Several similar companies are on the list as well.

The bad news is that like drug dealers, as soon as you take them off the street, someone else takes their place.  We call it the "revolving door" and it keeps us employed and perpetually busy.

Your best line of defense: if you don't recognize the number, don't answer it.  And, even if you recognize the number, the tools these scammers have can spoof phone numbers you know (google SpoofCard).  So, unless you recognize the number and the voice, don't believe it.  That includes the scam where your loved one has just been in a terrible accident and "I am using their phone to call you" (that means the scammer hijacked your loved one's Contact List).

Yes, it's a crazy world and for what it's worth, my phone ONLY rings if the number is in my Contacts.  Otherwise, they'll need to leave a convincing msg if I'm calling back.

Have been calling me for 2 years.  I always say "send me the info and I will gladly see you in court!"  Then nothing for about 2 months.   Now they call my sister who is 1000 miles away and they called her cell.  Do these people think we are that stupid?  If they call, ask for a number that your attorney can call.

Your term "legit scamming companies " is an oxymoron. If they're scammers, they aren't legit. If they're legit, they aren't scammers.
