- Antoinette HerrellReceived a voice message from "The Michigan Department of Treasury Collections Department" asking me to call them back regarding my outstanding taxes (which I do owe and have a payment plan agreement set up with). When I called, everything sounded like the real deal, even referenced phone number for other State of Michigan agencies. The prompter asked me to either put in the reference number they left on the voice message or to input my social security number. I somehow figure out a way to get to a live person and DID NOT provide my SSI or their account reference numbers. When I start to inquire why they were calling and that it was my understanding that correspondance is only conducted by mail, the person said that they were a 3rd party collection agency working on behalf of the state of Michigan. I told them that I would personally call the treasury and speak to a representative then hung up. I can see how some people would fall for this scam, since the recording when you call is almost identical to what the state recording is.

- WilliamSomeone called using their name saying they were the state of Michigan trying to contact me. When I called it was a company called Michigan accounts receivable.I went to answering service and no one answered. I waited ten minutes. Misrepresentation and I have the recording if we need to take this matter further...call me again.

- VellumI looked up the official number for the Michigan Accounts Receivable Collections and called them to verify. Yes, it is legitimate. They were looking for someone else and removed my number from their database.

- VanGoMy 17 yr old daughter got a call from 866-218-7374 on her cell phone asking for me, left a name and ref #. I called back to see what it was all about. It is from the State of Michigan where I HAVEN'T lived for over 21 years. Probably over some unpaid traffic violation. I live in a non-impact state so they can't do anything to my drivers license nor can they attach my taxes. Broke-[***] state needs to stop drinking the lead water and come up with some jobs or its gonna be the" single lost mitten state." They have a better chance of getting Oldsmobile to re-open then they do of getting me to pay for something 21 yrs old. I left Michigan for a REASON! Don't give them any information, don't even confirm or return the call. Just like the IRS scam if they have something to say or tell you it needs come from the Department of Treasury on State of Michigan letter head signed by the State Treasurer not some poser trying to flip a fast buck$$.

- SimonneReceived a voice mail on August 20, 2018, from a woman stating her name was "Ms. Cotton" at approx 9:56am. The caller I.D. registered the originating phone number as (313) 261-9827 (Detroit/Dearborn, MI area code but registered to a messaging system in Georgia). She stated she was calling from the State of Michigan and to call back @ (866) 218-7374 which is SUPPOSEDLY belonged to Michigan Accounts Receivable Collection System with no verifiable address to note. She also left a 6 character file number she provided that started with an XE w/4 numbers. She also provided the following hours: M-TH 8am-9pm, Fri 8am-6pm, Sat 8am-12pm.
The call detail I retreived from the originating phone number was the following:
Phone number: (313) 261-9827
Owner:
John Dutkewych
188 Bridgestone Way
Dahlonega, GA 30533-6462
Phone Servicer: American Messaging (AM) Inc.
First, I do not owe & have never owed Drivers Responsiblity Fees. My Lisense is current...no points & haven't had a traffic ticket in over 10 years. *A LITTLE OFF TOPIC* At the moment I don't drive since my older model car (paid in full) broke down & I didn't rush to have it fixed because the REDLINED car insurance and the monthly parking for work in Downtown Detroit costs more than repairs! I decided to save my money up to pay for all my car repairs, car maintainance + 1 yr of No Fault car insurance. I purchased a bus pass & catch 1 bus to work and back. No insurance, No monrhly parking!! If I need a car to drive somewhere on the weekend or so, I rent thru a GM ride share program or rent a car. You definitely could not do either if you owed the State of Michigan any fees or fines.
Secondly, I don't owe back income taxes, State funded Student Loans, Child Support (no children) or garnishments. I owe the State of Michigan zero, ziltch, nada, nothing.
Finally, the originating phone number is questionable as it is an Detroit/Dearborn area code but belongs to some dude's Messaging provider in Dahlonega, Georgia. Answer these questions: 1.) Why would a collection agency use some guy's residential phone number to initiate calls on behalf of a truly legitimate business? 2) Why is the Collection Agency's address not listed online and why won't the "agent" that called confirm an address? Why do tue "agents then hang up when you ask them for more identifying information? 3.) Why would the State of Michigan waste valuable resources to employ a collection agency to collect debt when they can suspend licenses, intercept tax refunds, place levies on property and/or have you arrested for dodging judgements/fees/fines?
The answer is...they wouldn't. The State of Michigan sends out paper notifications only to the residence listed on your lisense/ID/Tax return/court judgement. They will not call you...Turst and believe, YOU will call them or visit the appropriate State of Michigan office to iquire about your issue. So for those people that called back these phishers/scammers and gave them their personal info over the phone just because they had a nice demeanor when you called them back, please understand...they already had some basic info on you already that they potentially stole/purchased on the black market. Don't be fooled, you simply confirmed the info then gave them even more detail.
THIS IS A PHISHING/SCAM CALL!!
I never answer calls from unfamiliar/unknown or restricted phone numbers and I NEVER return shady voicemails like this one that "Ms. Cotton" bs ass left on my phone. I take out a little time to research them and bring to light what I found out in order to prevent someone else from being the next victim. I'm marking this as a phishing/scam call.- Caller: Phishing/Scam Call
