- Smart OneThey're at it again with a vengeance. Using- 866-232-0957 Husband got repeated calls at his place of employment saying they were a "location services" firm looking to issue him about a court summons. They got the operator and asked for his supervisor. Supervisor told my husband about the call and when we called it and we figured it was a scam the second we heard ASG. Not to be deterred... they called random people at his work the next day. I called them and got an Amber Johnson who forwarded me to Bethany Williams. I asked them if they were aware that what they are doing is illegal. She wanted me to give my out my husbands birthdate and social. Not going to happen. She became irate with me. These were the lies she told in no particular order. 1. My husband will be detained and taken away to court that very day and go to jail. 2. They do not have to follow FDCPA because they are a legal firm. 3. When I asked for a full name and legal address- she said ASG was not an acronym and didn't stand for anything (probably because when you google it- it becomes clear what a scam it is). I called the county sheriff. He said it's a scam and I should call the police. I called the police and they said to file a report with the IL State Attorney who has been going after this kind of fraud. So I did. I know it's bogus... but what a way to ruin a day. It make it really hard to be Christian with this kind of scum running around

- Justin Bridges| 3 repliesThey're not going to do anything about it. I've made similar complaints and get told someone is "going after" them too, but there's bigger fish to fry. They just appease irate people who call demanding action, but I guarantee you'll be forgotten and never hear from them again. Unless you have 10's of 1000's of dollars to drop on attorney fees and months of time free to pursue and obtain all the necessary proof, nothing gets done. Better to just avoid them and educate yourself about scams and tell your friends. The Christian comment I thought was weird. Christians aren't above anyone else. If you got unpaid bills and a crooked [***] collector comes after you, you've got to deal with it like anyone from any other religion. Even the good ol bible says to "owe no man anything." (Romans 13:8) Better to just avoid the scammers and pay your bills.

- BigA replies to Justin Bridges"They're not going to do anything about it." There are many proven reports of State AGs going after these criminal debt collectors. Filing a FDCPA lawsuit will not cost you thousands of dollars. It will cost them, for that is the way the law is written. It sounds to me like you are trying to discourage people from filing reports and suing this cretins. Why is that? The only reason you would have to discourage that action is if you worked for this company.
- BigAThis is a common ploy by criminals attempting to extort money from people by scaring you into believing that you will be criminally charged, go to jail, lose your driver’s license, have wages garnished, be sued, and a variety of other variations on this, all for an alleged or nonexistent debt. One of the tricks they use is to call your work place repeatedly in an attempt to shame you into paying. They also use the “process server” who calls and claims he is going to serve you, but then says you could avoid it by calling another number.
Federal law (FDCPA) requires them to send you a letter (US MAIL ONLY) within 5 days of their first contact that contains their name, physical address, the creditor’s name, and the amount of the alleged debt. It also must contains “mini-Miranda” telling you that it is an attempt to collect a debt and that all information will be used for those purposes. The one other important thing that this letter must also have in it is that you have a right to dispute the debt within 30 days of receipt of the letter and if you do so, all collection activity must be stopped until the debt is verified.
Read up on your rights here, get template letters to send and also make a complaint at this government site: http://www.consumerfinance.gov/
Also file a complaint with your State Attorney General's office.

Too bad folks on 800notes have to deal with that like anyone who actually follows the law. I guess the scam operations shut down by state attorney generals is a waste of time too in your opinion.
I will agree on one of your comments - educate yourself about scams. - Nimrod replies to U.R.KiddingmeAnd a long winded one to boot! Look how long it took him to get to his "pay your bills" shill message.
While I agree that one should pay their legitimate bills, paying your bills in order to avoid scammers will not work, as many of the scammers just make up (supposed) debts from thin air.
