They call my granddaughter trying to find me.  I have NEVER used her name/phone number for ANYTHING that I may have applied for in the past.  They threaten legal action!!!  Our last names are different, so how do they connect her to me?  Funny, they are trying to reach ME but they call HER.

This is a common ploy by criminals masquerading as debt collectors who are attempting to extort money from people by scaring you into believing that you will be criminally charged, go to jail, lose your driver’s license, have wages garnished, be sued, and a variety of other variations on this,  all for an alleged or nonexistent debt.  One of the tricks they use is to call your work place, friends, or relatives repeatedly in an attempt to shame you into paying.  They also use the “process server” ruse who calls and claims he is going to serve you, but then says you could avoid it by calling another number

Federal law (FDCPA) requires them to send you a letter (US MAIL ONLY) within 5 days of their first contact that contains their name, physical address, the creditor’s name, and the amount of the alleged debt.  It also must contains “mini-Miranda” telling you that it is an attempt to collect a debt and that all information will be used for those purposes.  The one other important thing that this letter must also have in it is that you have a right to dispute the debt within 30 days of receipt of the letter and if you do so, all collection activity must be stopped until the debt is verified.
Read up on your rights here, get template letters to send and also make a complaint at this government site:  http://www.consumerfinance.gov/

Also file a complaint with your State Attorney General's office.

They called a client of mine. My name with clients phone number as listed at TN Sec of State. My client gave them my office phone numbers where the same message was left. I called 866-248-8977 & Clarkson Law gave me an address which happens to be the Los Angeles Superior court address. I also called TN license board & was told Clarkson Law is not licensed & it is a scam.

There is a Clarkson law Firm in south Carolina that does debt collection.  At any rate, since they talked to your client they are legally obligated to follow FDCPA rules and to send that letter out by US mail within 5 days of talking to him.  It should contain everything I said, and he should immediately send them a certified, return receipt letter disputing the debt.  If they fail to do that, then you have the proof that they are not for real.

Called and left message saying there was a Court Order Summons for my uncle, and that they tried to deliver it but were unable to.  He lives in Africa and has not been in this country in 5-6 years.  No idea how they would have gotten this number.  We called back and they didn't tell us what this was in regards to and said they would remove our number.  Didn't ask any questions about him.

Phoned trying to contact my sister.  Claimed they tried to serve her but she was unreachable.  I called number to get information to relay to my sister; person answering phone stated person handling my case was unable to speak with me.  When I asked for a business name and address, the person on the phone became extremely rude and agitated.  He refused to give me any information until I verified who I was.  When I asked if they could send a letter to my address (since my sister was staying with me) they refused, claiming I wasn't taking the matter seriously.  Based on the rudeness and tactics of the person I talked to, I doubt this is anything but a scam.  Looked up number and it is flagged as such.

I received a call from this company in December. The company had my name, and claimed I owed a dept I know I paid. I call the company January 12th, and the person I spoke with claimed they attempted to serve me, but they didn't have an exact address for the summons. I immediately panicked thinking I owed a debt I know I paid. The law office was Clarks and Law center. They knew where the debt originated, but claimed the original creditor was out went out of business so I wouldn't be able to reach them. The man Anthony provided me with the last 4 digits of my social. I do not doubt this place is a scam, but I'm worried my identity may have been stolen. Does anyone have any suggestions on what I should do?
