This is a SCAM to hack into your accounts. They said there was an unpaid balance on my AMEX bill.  Untrue. They had my full name! I hung up.

After several days of repeated, ignored calls from this number I finally answered.  Caller claimed to be from American Express and calling me after failed attempts to contact my wife.  Caller had an Indian accent and asked for personal information to verify he was talking to a person connected to the account.  I politely told him that the call was unsolicited, I couldn't verify he was from AmEx and I would call AmEx myself on a proven customer service number.  This agitated him and he repeatedly tried to get me to give personal info.  After repeating myself several times I hung up.

Received call / message on my phone from 866-280-1853 (American Express ?) asking for another person, someone that I happen know, and asking them to call back at 623-492-2656
When I searched 866-280-1853 It comes up as American Express, but it seems to show up in scam calls listed here on 800notes, with different call back numbers given other than 623-492-2656.
Scam if I ever saw one.

This number called my mom, brother, and brother's ex wife asking for me, claiming to be American Express. I haven't had Amex for several years. They left a voice mail for "Mike" which no one calls me. Gave a call back number of 6234927139. I called American Express to confirm if my account was still open and if I owed anything. They also said that the call back number is not associated with them

Claimed they were from American Express.  Said I had a past due amount on my Delta AMEX Gold and that if I don't make a payment it was about to go to collections.

He talked very fast and sounded somewhat official (with the sounds of other people on the phone in the background).  I asked him to give me some more information about the account (i.e. account number, my address, zip code, ANYTHING) and they were unable to do so.

They said they could not give me more information until I verified my account with the last four of my SSN.  I told them there was no way I was giving them more information until they gave me more information about me.  I then asked him if I can call him back.  He said yes that I could call 623-492-7283.  I then said that's odd it's not a toll-free number.

I told him that when I Google the number it does not show that it is an American Express number.  He said that I could therefore disregard the call.  I said "hold on!  no, i want to talk to you and get you know more".  He kept stalling and eventually hung up.

This "Senior Account Manager" at "American Express" called with a very urgent message for Fernando Hernandez. I didn't answer, they left a VMM. If American Express can't get their [***] straight with their clients and their phone numbers, I can't be bothered. To my knowledge, my phone number has never belonged to a Fernando Hernandez. And I don't have an American Express card.

Similar to others, received following message on line listed as my home phone. This line is NOT the regular line for Amex... I don't even have an Amex.

This is an important message for <my name>. Mr. <name>, my name is Catina Rosina. I'm calling you from American Express. Please do not disregard this message as I need to share an important update with you, so I request you to call me back at my direct number 623-492-1880 again. My number is 623-492-1880. I'm here in the office til 6:30 p.m.. Eastern Standard time. I look forward to talk to you soon. If you're not able to reach me at my direct number. You can call the regular line for American Express at 866-280-1853. Thank you.

My wife called me at my office. Said American Express called looking to speak with me. I called American Express using the phone number on the back of my Green Card. I was connected to the advanced collection department. Found out they called me in error because my phone number hadn't been updated. I asked about both 866-280-1853 and the number cited by LM above, 623-495-6736. Both numbers belong to the American Express collections department. Calls from these numbers are not scams. They are simply trying to locate people who owe money to American Express. If you don't have an American Express account of any kind, then ignore the calls. Of course, you can call American Express at 1-800-297-3276 (number found under Contact Us on the AMEX web site), explain that you don't have an AMEX account, and ask to have your phone number(s) removed from their collections call list. Again, calls from 866-280-1853 and 623-495-6736 are not from scammers. They are genuine American Express phone numbers assigned to the AMEX collections department.

A very rude and condescending man called looking for someone who DOES NOT WORK HERE. Also, the calls are recorded  (heard a beeping sound) but he never disclosed that it was. (ILLEGAL??) He kept arguing with me about the fact I didn't have this person on my list and that I needed to find this person. STOP CALLING!

This number called me and left a voicemail claiming to be American Express. They asked for my parents (who would never have used my cellphone number on their account) and claimed it was a "personal business matter". The man had a think Indian accent and also said I could call him back on two different numbers.

American Express is its own entity.  Wells Fargo is a bank.  Neither is associated with each other.

First, you should make a complaint at this Federal Agency, and while there you should also read up on how debt collection is supposed to work as well as what your rights in this matter are: https://www.consumerfinance.gov/

Also file a complaint with your State Attorney General's office.
List of State AG’s offices:   https://800notes.com/faq/attorney-general

If you feel your SSN has been compromised, in addition to putting a fraud alert at the 3 credit bureaus, you may want to notify the IRS.  Here is the link, fill out the proper form (probably 14039):
