Missed the call and no msg left

I received a rather threatening letter (supposedly) from M&T Bank instructing me to call their toll free number to verify my information or they may close my account!  I called the # (NOT planning on giving them ANY personal info) and was told by the woman who answered and her manager that M&T sent letters out to thousands of customers to verify their information in accordance with the US Patriot Act, and that if I was not comfortable giving them my information via phone, that I could stop in to my local branch, or call the # on the back of my Debit card.   :\   At this point, I'm not sure what to think.... But it's NEVER a good idea to give ANY personal information out via phone to a number that you don't recognize.  The first thing they asked me was for my card or account number!!!  :(    A bank (of all places) should recognize the idiocy of that; considering all the identity theft there is going on in the world!!
My advice: Go to your local M&T branch and talk to them directly!!   Safety first!  Identity theft is no joke.

Received same letter. Did not return call. Letters from M&T are headed M&T Bank Corporation with the headquarters address beneath. The aforementioned letter has only M&T Bank at the top. Also the number 1-866-281-9451 does not appear anywhere on the M&T site. In conclusion... BUNK!

I called this number on the threatening letter I got from "M&T" and realized as I was talking to the lady that is probably a scam. We have recently moved so I assumed this request was connected with our address change.

I panicked and called M&T's regular number (from their website) and they confirmed that they had sent the letter. (I knew it was their web site as I had to go through an automated system that gave me my balance.) My new address was on the web site also after I logged in.

M&T is stupid. It seems like a genuine request on their part, But they ask for the first 5 digits of my SS number. They ask for personal information over the phone that nobody should be expected to give. And they send what is a threatening letter to scare me into calling them.

One last comment. MY CREDIT RECORDS ARE FROZEN. When sh*t like this happens, I am glad I did that.

It stinks to high heaven but the letters and phone # are legit per the M&T website: https://www.mtb.com/help-center/policies/update-customer-information Of course, call and get put on hold for 10+ minutes.

This number is technically legit.  Terrible practices, but legit, all the same.

I tried to login to my M and T account
and was prompted to call 866 281 9451
The only thing that I needed to update was my employment because everything else was correct I called she asked for my account and the first 5 of SS # which I gave
and she updated my info and I was able to log back into my account

Received a letter from M&T Bank stating my account would be closed if I didn't respond urgently with updated information under the Customer Identification Program provision of the USA Patriot Act. I called 1-866-281-9451 and the lady asked for my SSN which I told her was not giving over the phone.  She was able to find my info using just my name.  The lady told me to ignore the letter because the last 4 numbers of the account in question did not belong to me.  She searched closed accounts as well and nothing came up.  She seemed to think it was a phishing expedition but it didn't make sense to me bc why would they put a legit M&T Bank phone number as the contact for a scam?  Regardless, don't ever give out personal info over the phone.  It's scary what people can do these days with a few pieces of personal info.
