People's Gas Automated Payment Reminder Number.

IT'S A SCAM!!!!!   If you call that number then you will enjoy having your identity stolen.  

There is such a thing as People's Gas but there are [***] in this world posing as People's Gas that make their living the dishonest way and do not care who gets hurt.  May they do the world a favor and jump in front of a moving train.

You will notice that 866-295-0086 does not bring up People's Gas at all.  In fact, if you go to People's Gas website is not to even find a number resembling the 866-295-0086.  It is a scam and others have reported it online too.  People's Gas issued a warning back in 2012 about someone posing to be them through door to door visits, emails, or phone calls.  You can read about this on abc7chicago.com/archive/8739150/ back in July 17th of 2012.

The red flag to me was the fact that they called my wife's cell phone number.  The Gas bill (Nicor, not People's Gas) is in my name and not hers.  I also do not give my cellphone or my wife's cellphone number to any utility or even credit card company.  I want them to only bother me at home and not when I am on the road or at work.  

Also, if you are late on payments is not when a utility company threatens to take you to collections or ruin your credit.  They send you a notice that if payment is not received by a certain date that you will be disconnected.  You will ALWAYS receive a letter from them and not just a phone call.  They also address you by name on the phone calls even if automated.  These scamming [***] did not state our account number or even our name.  Also, we were not even late on our payments since we have them automatically debited each month.  

Never give out your personal information to anyone.  Never hand them a copy of your bill when they come to your door.  Never call back the number they give you over the phone or email.  Just take a copy of your latest invoice and call the number listed on that invoice.  Never supply them any information even though they might ask for the security code on the back of your credit card for security purposes.  That usually means that they have everything else but need one additional piece of information before scamming you is complete.

866-295-0086 is a scam.

No it is not!!!!  They "claim" to be the payment reminder but it is a scam.  

If you type that number online is not to find it linked to People's Gas at all.  The payment number for People's Gas is 866-556-6001.  Please visit People's Gas and notice that 866-295-0086 does not exist at all at their website.  Even reverse look-up does not show any listing for that number.  

Just to prove it is a scam is their own search engine found at People's Gas website:

At their home page is to see a search their site box in the upper right side of the page.  Here is what happens when I type in that scam number 866-295-0086:

Nothing in People's Gas own databank has any such number.  If you type any of People's Gas legitimate phone numbers into that same search engine is when links pop up.  

When you type People's Gas legitimate phone number into their search engine is when 3 pages of links pops up below.  

I just needed to correct you when you said in your post that the number is for making payments to People's Gas.  Never believe what the message tells you over the phone.  IT IS A SCAM!!!!

I made an error.  The phone number 866-295-0086 is a collection agency for People's Gas.  I thought it was a scam because they called my wife's cellphone claiming she was going to be handed over to collections.  We do not have People's Gas and when I visited People's Gas website and noticed that the phone number was nowhere listed is when I made the mistake of thinking it was a scam.

I contacted People's Gas in Chicago and gave them my wife's cell number.  It pulled up an account that belonged to them.  My wife has had that phone number for over 2 years so it was weird getting a phone call now as that is another reason why I thought it was a scam.  The customer service rep at People's Gas informed me that the account was sent to collections 866-295-0086 and that it is a legitimate number.

My mistake.  If you are receiving calls and do not have People's Gas then you can call them and inform them that they are calling the wrong number.

Basically i typed this number instead of the main peoples gas number on accident. Don't worry guys if you've made a payment to them for a peoples gas bill its legit. When i read all these comments i said [***] i got scammed, but in reality i didnt its just a third party company for the payments. I even called back peoples gas main number and they confirmed it too. This number is even on the peoples gas billing paper, so it has to be legit.

I received a call as well saying to call 866-295-0086. I called it and, as others have stated, it's a collection number for People's Gas and North Shore Gas and is indeed a valid number. For me, they are calling a second number that I use as my business line and have owned for 2 years. Apparently it's tied to someone else's account who must have had the number before me. I spoke with People's Gas, told them they are contacting the wrong person and that I own the phone number they are calling, trying to collect payment. Here's the kicker... Since I'm not the name on the account, they cannot remove the number, even though they're calling me and not the person who's account it is! So I have to deal with these frequent collection calls for someone else's failure to pay their bill. My account, at my address, is on autopay and is paid in full every month. Yet I have to now incur calls on another person's account because People's Gas cannot remove it. Unbelievable!!
