7:30 at night some joker rings the front door.  We ignored it because we were not expecting anyone.  15 seconds later our home phone rings from this number with no-one there.  Finally answer the door and it is some joker in a blue Bell jacket and a clipboard.  I figure these events are connected.

apart from entertainment value, the phone system really doesn't work that way.  the specs for what gets digitized and transmitted are pretty tight, with an upper frequency of 3000 (?) herz, and since it's all digital, no need to recreate sounds anywhere near the threshold of pain.

but if you sound like a fax machine, they're just going to move on, because it's not in their script.

unless these guys are out-and-out criminals (which seems unlikely, if the reports of actual bell installation, and crappy service, are true), it sounds like bell has farmed out its telemarketing operation in some way, apparently to some slimey turd-world telepest operation that also does "duct cleaning" calls.  oh, joy.

doesn't say much for bell or their management, does it?  but it should be possible to escalate the issue with bell's customer service to either get satisfaction, or at least to "persuade" them to drop the lying telepests.

i thought there was some consumer protection legislation that required vendors to honor their pricing?

no, it's not.  bell publishes their number as 310-BELL, with no area code.

these telepests are using a deliberately similar number, to deceive the marks, but the number is probably fake anyway.  they usually use cheap voip from somewhere in the far east, and put in whatever callerid information they feel like.

It was a recorded message from Bell letting me know they're cancelling my ePost service from Canada Post. Future bills will be coming through the MyBell service instead. It sounds like a marketing call at the beginning, but it's not. They announce their address and a phone number to call to clarify if you have questions, but eventually they actually give you the service message.

Get numerous calls from this number and I never answer the calls. No message is ever left by the caller. Based on the information presented here, the number will be permanently blocked.
Anyone who keeps calling and gets no reply may not be insane but, that person has to be clinically and chronically stupid!
    • Caller: Possibly Bell Canada

Got a call but didn't answer; no message left.  I think the scammers have gotten their computers to spoof a Bell number, hoping people will answer.  They use a computer auto-dialer that dials number after number - there isn't a PERSON there who knows or cares who the computer is dialing!  Like all modern call centres, the computer does the dialing of a list of programmed numbers and only if it gets a 'connect' with someone answering does the computer link it to a call centre agent (that's the 'dead air' pause of the computer transferring the call to an operator).

Remember that at one point Bell had outsourced their call centres to India; and customer push back was so severe, they dropped it and brought their call centre staff back to Canada again (New Brunswick, Quebec, Ontario, and BC locations).  So anyone who SOUNDS like an offshore call centre, it just might be and if they want YOU to confirm your Name/Address/Customer ID number and or phone - BE VERY CAREFUL and check it out by disconnecting and calling your own Bell Service number first!  It COULD be Scammers hiring the same former call centre employees in either India or Pakistan who have knowledge from before.  Scammers are looking for Personal Identifying Information - Name, Address, Phone Number, and Utility Account numbers or credit cares - used for Fraudulent IDs (including people smugging) or organized crime.  However, a legit telemarketing call they may have the information on computer OR they may just be employees being told to 'follow a script'.  Do not abuse Agents, most are people trying to earn a legitimate living just like the rest of us!  Scammers are the crooks hiring or posing as them and don't care!

I've had all the Telco centres lie to me when I've told them to stop marketing calls.  However as real companies in Canada, they ARE subject to the Do Not Call Registry and they DO get nailed for not following the Rules!  So hang up and call the REAL business number and check out any deals being offered.  DO NOT Believe any pre-recorded message that tells you to press a number to connect to a Live Agent - those always seem to be offshore scammers.  Offshore companies are not subject to the DNC rules and crooks wouldn't follow them anyway.  I just don't answer when I don't know who is calling anymore, and most often if I don't see the Display simply hang up at the 'dead air pause' before it connects as it makes the computer think the number is no longer valid (it will stop after 3 attempts).
