left message about "final affairs" of my father in law. No answer when I called back, but said it was a debt collector

Okay, I just had a similiar thing happen regarding the "final affairs of my step-father.  I didn't even bother to call back.  I quickly typed in the number on the internet to see what would come up.

Caller stated his name was John Flynn left a reference number

recieved a call regarding my ex wifes acoount
they were looking for family members to settle her account.
I am going to have a lot of fun with one.
I remember the last time she pulled this on me.

Just got a call from  this number,the person was looking for my mother ,in regards of my father who just passed away in july.He wouldnt give me any info. to tell her,do people really expect you to call back when all u give them is a name .

just recieved call regarding mother's death, gave name, number and reference number to refer to.  already cancelled credit cards, should not receive calls for any reason.  am settling estate so there is no reason for any calls to come in.

my mom just got a letter from HSBC / phillip cowan and associates.  My stepdad just passed away and they want to handle the final affairs.  they said he owes $292.17.  No way!  My stepdad NEVER owed anyone anything!  He was extermely frugal.  I also got a recording from a debt collector.  This is obviously a scam!

Jason Rhoades called my brother regarding her estate. My brother hasn't talked to my mom in tears AND isn't even in her will. The only connection to her?  Same last name.Seeing my name is on everything of hers AND her house, I smell fraud  here.

I just received a call regarding my ex-husband who recently passed. I think these scam artists are trying to get money, which is not owed, from estate administrators . We have been divorced for 18 years. I am not connected to the estate and they must have gotten my name from GOOGLE.

Same thing here ~~ although I know he was in debt up to his earlobes trying to keep the *itch he married happy!  So glad I don't "have to be" nice anymore!

I received a voice mail today from "Jason" wanting a call my regarding my father's debts. He passed away in January and we do not even have the same last name. Obviously a scam as my name or phone number is not on any of his accounts. Did not leave the name of his company in the message. I called the number and it is Philip and Cowen a debt collector.

Just recieved same call about my 'late' mother who is alive and well! Feel sorry for those who actually fall for this type of thing.

This tel# is not a scam.  I work for this company and we do Probate Billing for several creditors.  We try to reach family/loved ones or attorneys/executors to file creditors claims and settle debts left by deceased debtors.  We fully disclose no liability and usually offer a discount to "settle" the debt outside of the Probate Process.  Most of the time we deal with attorneys who charge more than the debt that is incurred.  Family members and loved ones are not liable to pay a debt of a deceased family member.  The scam is that probate attorneys charge these people(family members) exorbitant fees to "fend off" creditors when they are not even liable in the first place.  Attorneys love us because they can prey on clients who are afraid of collection agencies.  The truth is that a regular person off the street with no law degree(or any degree for that matter) can do almost everything that these shark Probate attorneys are charging hundreds of dollars an hour to do.  I hope I don't have to call you because if I do it means that a loved one/associate of yours passed away and owed my client money.  Just talk to us and refer us to the proper party instead of ignoring the calls.  We get paid to call.  That is what we will do until we speak with the "authorized party".
