Super important.  Please read.  This number looks like it’s from the CIBC and it absolutely is not. After them calling me under the guise of offering deferred bill payments or a low interest loan I contacted CIBC directly and was told that this number was absolutely not the CIBC and to not answer the phone because it’s a scam

I received a call by a woman saying she was calling from CIBC and offering me a loan at a lower rate of interest than my CIBC visa debt which would allow me to pay off my visa debt and that she would call back a certain day and time the following week. I felt something was fishy. i did not receive the promised call, but several days later I received a call from CIBC 866-323-9970 which I did not answer.  It was after 8 PM.  I checked on-line and figured it was the return call from the initial bogus caller.

I received a call yesterday from this number asking about a past due balance for my credit card and asked when I will be making a payment. Even though the name popped up as CIBC, I still asked them to verify the last 4 digits of both my credit cards with CIBC before I started to discuss any sensitive information. They were able to tell me the correct numbers so I carried on with the conversation as if they were legit. The discussion turned into consolidating my debt and she took most of my information like address, phone number, she knew my past employer, etc. Again, this seemed legit! At the end of the conversation she said I'd been pre-approved for the loan and that i'd get a call within 24-48hrs for the comprehensive application and a follow up email. I never got the email but they did call back today. Unfortunately I was on facetime with my fiance and when i tapped accept call both calls dropped.

Anyway, today I paid my credit card and i'm usually able to start using it right away but It wasn't working. I called CIBC to see what the issue was and they just said it was locked because my account wasn't paid. Forunately they saw my payment and unlocked it right away - BUT i mentioned the call i got yesterday and after i gave them the number, they didn't recognize the phone number 1-866-323-9970 and said that it may be a scam.

I don't know about these scammers now, they're rlly good! This woman knew my address, phone number, previous employer, middle name etc. She knew my credit card numbers too. I'm so confused. I'm kinda bummed i'm not able to consolidate my debt haha and i was honestly a bit worried seeing that i didn't get the email. I'll see if they call back and will report back lol
