    They claimed to be from the electric company - offering to give me free energy-saving light bulbs.  Several things seemed fishy:

    1) they wanted to come on a holiday
    2) I hadn't heard anything about the program (you would think there would be a press release or something
    3) the caller was having trouble with my name and couldn't identify my gender

    I hung up and called the electric company directly.  No such program.  It's a scam to get your account number and switch you over to lord knows what!

    Claims they were from Con Edison electric company and wanted to change all my light bulbs to energy savers

    This is a legitimate program, they came and did my entire building on the upper east side.  The bulbs are supposed to last for ten years.
