I got a call today from unknown number. I usually don't answer those. my phone accidently picked up and when I listened I just heard someone I didn't know saying hello. I hung up. they called back and left a message saying they were a detective calling/ investigating an identity theft and it appears someone has stolen my identity. call them back- of course I am always suspicious when these things happen. so i looked the number up on my cell phone web- it is is a really agency, there would be a number listed right? of course there wasn't. So I called- just says " you have reached the theft department", " record your name so that you can be transfered to the detective's  cell phone"....transfered? no company name. nothing. I said my last name to see what would happen... elevator music. so what do I think? either  scam- or a collector.

Well, I don't know what you guys are all talking about. I looked up this number, and took all of the information down that she gave me like how to protect myself (free of charge) how to prevent id theft, and didn't ask me for any personal info at all.  Why ON EARTH would she, or anybody else give out my SOCIAL SECURITY NUMBER??  Now that would be TOTALLY SCARY!!!  You people are freaks!!!

If you had ANY conversation w/ANY of these people and you can't understand WHY they'd take your SSN and USE it...then YOU are the one who is SCARY! The FTC, the FBI, and SEVERAL LAW ENFORCEMENT AGENCIES from COAST TO COAST are TRACKING/INVESTIGATING THESE PEOPLE AS WE SPEAK! the ONLY people who you should trust for any LEGITIMATE information about identity theft are the BANKS INVESTIGATORS, the ACTUAL CREDIT REPORTING AGENCIES or LAW ENFORCEMENT! good luck with sorting out the mess they will create for you when they use your info to obtain passports, loans, commit crimes, etc. in YOUR NAME!

what name did they give you?? how did you verify they were legitimate?? why would they lie to people and tell them attempts had been made to obtain credit cards online?? (when a check w/actual credit reporting agencies shows NOTHING?) why do you think they hung up when the police called? then BLOCKED the police from calling back?? why is their phone line now disconnected?? are YOU one of THEM??

These people do not work for any legitimate organization. It is a proven scam and should be reported to local law enforcement. They are up to no good.

Same as above - said they were a repo company,County Repossession Services,  and they would be in my area today, Immediate action is required. I knew I didn't have anything past due, but thought it might be for a family member. Suspicions were raised when they said to call back 2-866... Don't know of any "2" prefix so went online. Thanks for the info.

Hi folks - got the same Detective Mary Laurel call - 4 credit applications supposedly made in my name in Colorado. She told me to contact the 3 credit agencies and put a block on my credit and to call FTC.GOV as well.  She had my name, phone number, address and last 4 digits.  She told me she would mail me copies of the 4 applications.  I didn't give her any info(the only thing she seemed to be going for was where I worked). I've been pulling my hair out dealing with phone calls and on-line nonsense to all the credit agencies to put a fraud alert on my name.  In the meantime, I never received any copies.  I called the number back and received a recorded message "the telephone number you are calling from is invalid. Please call back from a valid telephone number." ???????
What kind of a scam is this? They apparently have your info already, why send you to equifax, experion and transunion????  Oh, by the way, the number has changed it's 866-864-5618 now.(and when questioned, she said she was from San Diego and gave me a "shield number".

Sounds eerily similar to a call we received about a week ago.  Called saying they were a detective and our identity had been stolen.  They already had last 4 of SS#.  Seems they wanted to know place of employment.  And if we had any enemies.  The number they called from was "unknown"  but they gave us legitimate police phone numbers to contact them.  However the police dept has no knowledge of the case number or extension number we received.    WEIRD>>>>
