Left message saying I owed oustanding debt and wanted me to call and make arrangements. Then had a man call from another number which was blocked leaving message to set up time to serve me paperwork. I do not owe any outstanding debt, think call was a scam.

This is a common ploy by criminals masquerading as debt collectors who are attempting to extort money from people by scaring you into believing that you will be criminally charged, go to jail, lose your driver’s license, have wages garnished, be sued, and a variety of other variations on this,  all for an alleged or nonexistent debt.  One of the tricks they use is to call your work place, friends, or relatives repeatedly in an attempt to shame you into paying.  They also use the “process server” ruse who calls and claims he is going to serve you, but then says you could avoid it by calling another number.  Please note that process servers do not ever call ahead.  That way you can’t dodge them.

Federal law (FDCPA) requires them to send you a letter (US MAIL ONLY) postmarked within 5 days of their first contact that contains their name, physical address, the creditor’s name, and the amount of the alleged debt.  It also must contains “mini-Miranda” telling you that it is an attempt to collect a debt and that all information will be used for those purposes.  The one other important thing that this letter must also have in it is that you have a right to dispute the debt within 30 days of receipt of the letter and if you do so, all collection activity must be stopped until the debt is verified.

Read up on your rights here and also make a complaint at this government site:  http://www.consumerfinance.gov/

Also file a complaint with your State Attorney General's office.

When you call the number they do not even answer the phone professionally. SCAM.

Eric calls with an unlisted number and leaves a msg to call Mower Mediation Group at 866-707-1411. Eric says he will serve me papers for a court date unless I call Mower and they place a stop order on the case.  Is there a way to ever see if a court order has been filed on someone and by whom?

Private number called stating his name was Marcus Peterson a process server from the county I lived in, said that he would be out with court papers between 5-7 pm or tomorrow morning at the latest, I could call 866 707 1411 if i wanted to find out more information and how to stop the papers from being deliverd.  He said the company name was Mower (or Mauer) Mediation Group, which neither exist online.  When I called the phone number it was a Lady by the name of Angie that I spoke to, said that I had a PDL that I did not pay back, which I totally agree that I did not, only because my bank would not let them take the funds out.  They said that they were tagged as being Fraud and would not send the money.   The company then asked me to go to the store and get a green dot prepaid credit card to pay them and I refused because that was extra money out of my pocket. The company has called me twice now as well as "Marcus Peterson" Right now I am going to take this as it is a fake call.  I have looked up in my area to see if there were any filed judgments against me and there is not.

I just received a call form Sharon Carter stating that she will be at my home in the next couple of days to serve me with something.  Total BS!!!!  I can call Mauer and set up payment arrangements....for what I don't know.  I was a little concerned but it just doesn't make any sense to me.

Yes.   Go down to your local main civil court and check the defendants covo; ;ost/  The clerks are usually glad to help and they are familiar with this kind of scam.

Ignore and block these calls. If you were the subject of a pending civil lawsuit, you'd have received a letter from the attorney for the other party.  You'd have a paper trail.

Then, if a case was filed, you'd have received a summons delivered to you by someone licensed to serve process in your locality.  You would NOT have first heard about any civil law case from some scammery-scummery debt collector who cold calls you and starts demanding money.

Just because someone on the phone calling you says you owe a debt does not mean you actually owe it.

If a voice on the telephone claims you owe a debt:

    1.    Demand the person give you his or her name, company name, and address
    2.     Demand a debt validation letter by US mail.  E-mail no good.
    3.    Do not pay  the collection agent or anyone else a  dime until the debt is validated

Of course they won’t do this, no scammer ever will, so simply ignore them and block their calls.

If they are bothering you, report them:

http://www.consumer.ftc.gov/articles/0149-debt-collection (Threatening civil proceedings with no intent to follow through, or threatening criminal process in order to collect a civil debt is a  violation of the Federal Fair Debt Collection Practices Act.)  The same goes for endless telephone harassment

Also contact your local attorney general

If they continue to bother you,  and you know you do not owe any money, tell them that you know this is  a debt scam and that you are making a complaint to the police for extortion.  Once you get a copy of the police report and they call you again , just read out the  file number and the name of the PD or Sheriff’s office involved.   Tell them you’ll be glad to send a copy to them at whatever address the jack***es are working out of now.

You'll probably have to yell at them and talk over them.
You have to get tuff with these people because,  being akin to thugs, brute force is (metaphorically speaking),  the only thing they understand.

NO process server is going to call you in advance; you could hide if you knew they were coming. And you can't buy your way out of a summons, either, which is what they will claim if you speak to them. My advice is to block the number or at the very least, ignore them when they call.

Demand they mail you proof of this supposed debt. All debt collectors are required by law to send you a Validation of Debt. This is sent through the USPS ONLY (faxes, emails, and phone calls aren't acceptable) and it must state when you incurred the debt, who you owe the original debt to, and how to proceed if you disagree with the VOD.

By law, the VOD must be sent within 5 days of the first time the company attempts to contact you. If they claim they cannot send this, already sent this, or you will receive the information after you pay them, you know it's a scam.
