George Venders left a message stating that there was a pending legal matter placed against my full name, birth date and social security number for a check submitted in my name.  He was calling with Cowanberg & Associates and wanted to give me a chance to issue a statement about the case before it was refered to my county law enforcement.  He gave a case # for me to refer to and said to call him back @ 866-448-2005 x-319.
Think this is a scam.  Going to check out the law firn name before calling back since there is no other info. here about this #.  The # that he called from was 813-498-2996 on my caller ID.

The name of the company you are referring to is Cohen, Burke, & Associates. I was recently contacted by them, too. I checked their website. www.cohenburkeassociates.com and all the info matched what the guy told me. I took out a loan with EZQuickloan, but they couldn't tell me the lender's name because of what they call "lender privacy regulations". I didn't believe them, especially since the number for EZQuickloan was disconnected, but after checking the website, I see what they were saying about giving the lender's info. I don't have a problem paying, but I'm not giving a dime to a scam. I've never seen one of these companies come with a website with the dag-on address and all the info the guy gave match up so, I guess my question, is this cohen, burke, & assoc a real company?

What I have found in further researching is:
This is a common scam. Scam artists will call someone over the phone, tell him that he owes money on a loan, and try to scare or berate him into paying. It's a violation of federal law to tell someone that they will go to jail for non-payment of a debt. In addition, federal law requires that a debt collector send the debtor notices within five days after the first contact, and inform him of the right to request verification of the debt. These people didn't do any of that, so they're in violation of the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act. I've also never come across a debt collector that insisted on immediate payment via Paypal.

What he can do is send them a letter, asserting his right to receive validation of the debt. If they won't give him an address - it's certainly a scam. If they threaten to call the police, they are welcome to do so. Your son should call the police himself and report them. Under Section 805 of the FDCPA, he can also ask that they stop contacting him by phone. Here is a sample letter.

Hi, I just got a call by the same company Cohen Burke telling me that I took out a payday loan with EZ Quick loans which I never did. They told me the same thing that both of you were told and I was given a case number and the amount I owe is over $2100 but they will settle for $680.59 through pay pal. I asked for copies of the "so called" 4 notices that EZ Loans sent me trying to settle and they said they didn't have that information. I asked for the date that the loan was given, they couldn't provide me with that. YES...this is a scam. A actual collection agency would have and be able to provide that information. Please do not send these people money. The number I was given to call back after I sent my payment is 1-866-448-2005  extension 332. The number on my caller ID was 281-674-8762.

I just got the call from the above individual with the same business name. DEJA VU! About a year ago I surfed online for a loan and got one for a small amount and paid it off, but it wasn't with easy quick, so yes they wouldn't tell me the company. They said they are a mediator and represent the company. They also couldn't give me any details, said they would email it. The loan company supposedly sent me letters in the mail that I still owed and they want $25 a day for up to two years. As of now I had a $300 loan (which was true) but now owe $900 and they want to settle before court. I asked if they could prove they sent me anything, I never got anything nor signed for anything in the mail, they said it was electronic. If I owed them they would use mail, not the internet for anything official. Also my phone and address hasn't changed. Why didn't they take the $I owed out if they had my account and routing info!!!  I also noticed he didn't sound professional, kept interupting me and talking fast, and didn't speak properly, which isn't indicitave of a professional business. The Deja Vu part is that around that time I got harrassing phone calls several times a day for a long time threatening me about a lawsuit and later found out it was a scam, they have your last 4 from  the internet when you looked for a loan but thats it, they try to get other inffo from you. Also I could hardly understand them when they talked. The internet said to threaten them to report and I did, then never heard from them again. I think this is related, they probably have a call & info list, now some time has passed and got to me again to start this up. I am glad to read these posts cuz I was freaking out, knew that I paid it! I will see what pdf they send, and I am going to check all my bank statements to make sure all was paid, and the papers from the loan co that I used, which wasn't easy quick loans!  Will update.

P.S. what type of company has a tiny little website with hardly any specific information on it??  It doesn't really say what they actually do.  Also the odds of the same person calling people all over the country, apparently they only have one employee named George, but he passed me to someone else that sounded the same, then againg to another person, they kept saying they will pull up my info... 3 times???

Update: I sent the above letter to them via certified mail. Two months later it was returned never having been signed for or opened. There is your answer, they are a fraud! I haven't been bothered since.
