text came through with same message. I do have a citi account, however they have never sent me a text. ever.

I got the exact same text as Slim on 8/19.  I contacted Citi and they weren't the ones who sent it for that credit card. I think it may be from Sears...as the Sears card is also through Citi.  Free message?  Not for me.
And who knows, it could be a phisher.

I got the same text. I called the number on the text mess. and they asked me for my card number. When I told the guy I didn't have it in front of me, he then asked me for my SS#, which I flatly refused to do. Called customer service & they said it sounded fradulent. Never give out your security info! These thieves are hitting us from all sides, below & above it seems. What's next? Carrier pigeon phishing?

Citibank says it's their #. I was suspicious too, but they 100% set my mind at ease, and I'm not easily convinced about anything.  When I called that #, I made a change to my account and got e-mail notification thru the usual Citibank system that the change was posted.  I also called back later to the published Citi Card service # (800) 950-5114. They said they had a record of my call to the 866 # and I shouldn't be concerned about fraudulent activity in this particular case.  Hope that helps the rest of you too.

I got that exact same message on my BB yesterday. Only problem is that I just checked the only active card I have with Citi and there's been 0 activity since my last payment and I never asked for free alerts. I also Googled the sender (70650) and found this:
