- Call type: Debt collector
- MikeHuntleton replies to Jason Bopp| 1 replyIt is a scam, as you would have had to go to Court and violated a Court Oder before a Judge would issue a warrant. Owing money is not illegal and you can't be arrested because you owe money. You can however be arrested for violating a Court Order.
Scammers use these scare tactics to get people to call them because they can't scam anyone if they can't talk to anyone.
Most debt collectors will use a certain amount of pressure to convince you to pay the debt. After all, they often don't get paid unless you pay. Be suspicious of a debt collector who uses an unusual amount of pressure to get you to pay immediately, particularly if they also use scare tactics to get you to pay right away. For example, a debt collector is scamming you if it :- threatens you with a lawsuit and tells that you can avoid the lawsuit by paying right away
- Says a Process Server or Courier is coming with papers to sign
- Threatens to call / go to your place of employment
- Insists you have been notified, served or are non-compliant via phone message(s)
- Refuses to give a company name or verifiable Contact source
- Refuses to send proof of debt via US mail
A sure sign of a debt collection scam is a collector that wants to you to pay via wire transfer or another method that can't be traced. If the payment method can't be traced, you'll have a harder time getting the authorities involved.
If the creditor sounds completely foreign, or you know you never had an account with that business, there's a chance it's a scam. Never pay a collection you don't recognize. You have the right to request written proof of the debt from the debt collector before you send payment.

At least that's how it must seem once the fake debt collectors get hold of incomplete loan applications and/or stolen data. Cardinal Legal aka Cardinal Legal Group is a repeat offender thought to be holed up in Tampa, Florida. They're ever ready to sue over payday loans, so they claim, known for making familiar dumb threats regarding a "fax order", which is a meaningless yet popular term for their ilk.
They may be related to a United Bureau of Services, who also chase dubious PDL debt with "fax order" threats. UBS also likes to hassle the victim's workplace and threaten as a "final attempt" to serve "papers" there in response to no-call demands.
CFPB Q&A: Can a debt collection agency try to have me arrested over a debt collection?
FTC alert: Fake Debt Collectors - Joelle Lane| 2 repliesThey told me I had a loan that was past due from 7 yrs ago and a judgement was being sent to me if I didn’t pay or set up arrangements. They took $571.50 out of my account. I try to call them back and it just rings and rings no answering machine picks up

- Lucki| 1 replyThis 866 number is the one that showed up once the payment went through my account. It started out with a 'private number' (undisclosed) that left a message from 'Melissa', a 'private carrier with the county' about serving me at my work or home and to call 'your filing party immediately'. We left a message that evening that serving papers at a work place is illegal. The next day I spoke with 2 people (first a woman, then a man) at the office and requested proof of the debt. They said it was from 6 years ago, 'likely from a payday loan'. I said I didn't take out any payday loans in 2015. They said 2015 is when the contract ended, so the loan was probably years earlier. I said send me a copy of this debt so that I can look it over tonight. No actual debt info was ever sent. I "talked them down" to $321.50 instead of what they initially wanted, $371.50. DO NOT PAY THESE PEOPLE. Please learn your rights per state, as well as the length of time and legal requirements an actual debt company must live up to. Don't let fear or wanting to improve your credit scare you into losing money to what is NOT a debt you legally owe.

- Lawanda B Slack| 2 repliesI got a call from an unknown number with a recording instructing me to call 828-604-8669 regarding a legal matter. So when I called the number, young man answered and stated that he was calling me from Cardinal Legal Services regarding a judgment against me. Alleging that I had a judgment against me stemming from an online payday loan I applied for, was approved for, and had received from Ace Cash Express. Supposedly in January 2011 I obtained a payday loan in the amount of $300 that was deposited into my Chase checking account. The loan defaulted in April 2017 and with interest and fees the new total was $576.50. This person/company had my last mailing address because I moved almost a year ago and he had an email address that I setup in 2005 just before I deployed to Afghanistan. This person/company also had the last four digits of my ssn and he was correct. When I requested a debt validation letter, I was placed on hold and transferred to “John Simmons” at ext 3208. The sad thing is, that not just this company/person, is a very special type of stupid. I say this because I live in NC. North Carolina was the very FIRST state to permanently ban/prohibit payday loans of any type back in 2001, an entire two (2) decades ago. Furthermore, before I called that number, I made sure to have my recording device set and started to ensure that the ENTIRE conversation/encounter was properly documented. “John” stated that his company had already mailed and emailed me validation of this “debt” several times when I once again requested to be sent either USPS mail or email another validation of the debt. He then became very irate and much more forceful with his attempts to get me to make a payment of $576.50 on the spot. He failed to realize that I too was trained in debt collection as a collections agent for Capital One Visa/MasterCard. So, I am very much aware of the FDCPA as well as the statute of limitations regarding debt collection for NC, which happens to be three (3) years. In addition, I know that I can’t and won’t go to jail over any type of failure to repay a payday loan of any variety. So, even IF I did owe a balance on a payday loan, the statute of limitation for NC expired on that loan in April 2020. Regardless of which way he twists, turns, or tries to flip the situation, there would be absolutely NO legal recourse. Plus, according to him, the “debt” was purchased from AceCash Express by Eastern Financial Services meaning that ONLY the original creditor has the ability to pursue ANY collection on the “debt” anyways. These idiots were preying and praying that I was going to be ignorant to the games they were playing. When I wasn’t going along according to their plan, John threw a tantrum and disconnected the call. I am definitely smarter than what they expected. I do deal with “he say/she say” incidents. I always come with receipts and very well documented, unaltered proof of the encounter. Eastern Financial Services is a car finance and loan company located in Greenville, NC 2512 Charles Blvd, Greenville, NC 27858; 252-364-8939. This company has been in business since 7/1/2013, it is an LLC, and supposedly only has (2) employees. Each and every business in NC MUST be registered and can be located on the NC SOS website. So, I did very much take and pull up all the documentation for Eastern Financial Services to compare information. Once again, these two males, not men, but just males, were preying on and praying for me to be ignorant and I am far from that. I have the time, effort, energy, knowledge, skills, and resources to untangle their web of lies. I will most definitely get to the bottom of the scam and expose them. My goal is to make sure that no one falls victim to these low life bottom feeders.

- Ketabug| 4 repliesI received a voice message from Cardinal Legal Services yesterday 12/08/2021. Stating a Michael Jackson has opened a legal complaint against me and I was placed on their schedule to be served sometime this month. That I have the legal right for mediation and a return call is necessary to address the petition with their office. That once I was located and served I forfiet all rights for meditation. Also stated, for me to please feel free to contact office about complaint with legal department and no response was needed. My visual voice message showed a Connecticut number but in the visual voice message text it shows a Georgia number for their legal department. I called both numbers and got a voice message. Confirming the name of business was Cardinal Legal Services. I took it a step further because I live in Georgia and was curious if the Georgia number could receive text messages. Yes, I sent a text message with no reply.

Gunnar - MLB replies to Ketabug| 2 repliesI got a call from this number 866-552-6034 also claims to be with cardinal legal services located in Chicago Illinois. I said I need a verification letter per FDCPA law. They sent me a DocUSign email which shows their address, account number, debt owed but doesn’t provide information on how to go along with the debt, a website or the original creditor. I put in the street address they provided but only a Cardinal Legal Group comes up which is a law office. So I called them. I spoke to the lady over there and let her know this “cardinal legal service” was using the same logo as them. She found this very weird and even went to her supervisor about it.
I told this supposed debt collector yet again that I am requesting a validation letter via US mail. They said they sent it through email (the docUsign email). I told them that is not a validation letter and I want a certified letter outlining the debt as well as the original creditors contact information. They said they have reached out through US mail then said it doesn’t matter if they send it now because tomorrow they will be submitting their report to the plaintive (Comenity Bank) who will move forward with litigation through the courts and then I would just wait to be served paper work to go to court over the matter. - BigA replies to MLB| 1 replyThey gave you the address of a an actual law firm? What was the address? Debt validation letters must be requested in writing by law. You should have received a dunning letter. The Docusign would have been an agreement to pay them.
