They just called here too.  No message on my machine.  100% guaranteed that it was a BS call though, given the number.

I also got a call from this number. How are these people get our number ? We have been getting quite a few of this type of call. We are on the "do not call list".

They have called me four times in the past two days, one time the number appeared as +86 663-37731 (literally just now and then they called immediately after from the 866 number). They haven't left a message and don't seem to wait until the phone even goes to the answering machine. Super curious to know what this is about but this appears to be a new campaign/scam/number and there isn't much information online.

Just called the number back as I've seen 3 calls on my display from this number in the past 2 hrs.  The automated message said 'you've reached the central polling centre' or something along those lines.  With the election in Ontario & so many people being undecided I guess they are trying to figure out who people are voting for this Thursday. Annoying to say the least!

What options does one have to defend themselves against intrusive callers?

    • The Do Not Call list (Federal or State)
Works, but is effective against ONLY "legitimate" telemarketers.  Political callers, surveys and some other callers are exempt.  Scammers ignore the DNC list.

    • Shouting, screaming, swearing at the caller
Nope.  Does not stop calls.  May make you hoarse, and will disturb nearby people.

    • Call blocker app, device or service
Could be a good choice (even though the scammers can use fake phone numbers), and some apps are free!
Google "call blocker" for more information, or check your favorite online sales site for a list.

    * Your phone provider may also offer blocking services.  Check their web page for information.

If you cannot use any of the above defenses, then:
    • Do not answer calls from unknown numbers ... let them go to voicemail or answering service
    • Do NOT return calls from unknown numbers!  All that does is verify your phone number!  And, in some cases, those return calls may cost $20 or more to complete.

    • If you have a "dumb" cell phone, assign the scammer's number to a group named "scammers" (or similar).  Then, assign a silent ringtone to that group.
