Stole credit card info Debited checking account

This is a scam.  It starts with a mailed postcard, offering an opportunity to enter a contest with a $1,000,000 prize.  The victim calls the telephone number to enter the contest.  They are then offered an opportunity for "free jewelry" for a handling charge of $8.95.  Once they give credit card details, they are enrolled in a monthly "jewelry club" at a monthly cost of $19.90.

My 90yr old mother received a promotional postcard stating she owes $8.95 and to call to make pymt. Mother did not realizing that she was signing up for promo jewelry each month!!! She did think it was a bill! I know that sounds like a cop out but she is 90! I tracked the company down and got this canceled and explained my concern for the way the promo was handled and written. In very small lettering did it state the monthly program. They did cancel her account...beware of these scams...

I received a Parcel Claim Card in the mail and was prompted to call 800-234-2124.  The number 866-679-1024 was proported to be the customer Service Number.  I wrote down all the information the person on the phone gave me.  I have called the 866-679-1024 number; however, my information has not come up on their system as yet.  I will call them back before 8:00 pm tonight to see if the information has been uploaded to their system, and if so, will then cancel all of the other items.

This smells like a scam.  My mother, who is 92 and suffers from dementia, answered an offer for a FREE necklace and matching earrings.  She would be charged postage which amounted to $24.95 (seems she opted for the special rush handling).  Since my mother has not bought any jewelry in the last 30 years, this seemed a bit strange.  I called the number listed on her credit card charge and cancelled all future mailings.  Why do these people continue to prey on old folks?
