Left a voice message saying her name was Linda Lawson calling from the fraud department. But didn’t say the name of where they’re from. Just “fraud department”. Called them back, said I owe $900 for some loan I never paid back from 2013 and demanded immediate payment. Called their BS and asked for them to send me documentations first then we’ll see if I’ll pay. Told me they don’t need to since the loan company I borrowed money from already sent me enough notices. Lies. I told them I wouldn’t pay until I had something in writing. Then told me they would after I paid my dues. OK! Threatened me by saying they have my info and social security number and note that I am noncompliant. Oh really? Of course things escalated and the call was disconnected. Oh darn. Don’t bother answering/calling this number back. They’re definitely the FRAUD department alright. Moral of the story is: Don’t bother applying for loans online. Your info will be saved and will use it against you.

    _________________________
Just because someone on the phone calling you says you owe a debt does not mean you actually owe it.

If a voice on the telephone claims you owe a debt:

    1.    Demand the person give you his or her name, company name, and address
    2.     Demand a debt validation letter by US mail.  E-mail no good.
    3.    Do not pay  the collection agent or anyone else a  dime until the debt is validated

Of course they won’t do this, no scammer ever will, so simply ignore them and block their calls.

If they are bothering you, report them:

http://www.consumer.ftc.gov/articles/0149-debt-collection (Threatening civil proceedings with no intent to follow through, or threatening criminal process in order to collect a civil debt is a  violation of the Federal Fair Debt Collection Practices Act.)  The same goes for endless telephone harassment

Note that the US Supreme Court in the Case of HENSON ET AL. v. SANTANDER CONSUMER USA INC., has recently ruled that the provisions of the Federal Fair Debt Collection Practices Act do not apply if the creditor owns the debt in question.  As a practical matter this probably won't effect the kinds of scam debt collectors who often show up on 800notes.  The scam collectors don't give you any information about themselves so it is impossible to know whether or not they in fact "own" the debt in question.  Most do not send debt validation letters and many often say they are collecting for someone else.  So, make the complaint anyway if they are bothering you.  Let the FTC sort it out.

Also contact your local attorney general

If they continue to bother you,  and you know you do not owe any money, tell them that you know this is  a debt scam and that you are making a complaint to the police for extortion.  Once you get a copy of the police report and they call you again , just read out the  file number and the name of the PD or Sheriff’s office involved.   Tell them you’ll be glad to send a copy to them at whatever address the jack***es are working out of now.

You'll probably have to yell at them and talk over them.  Tell 'em  no scammy debt collector is going to push you around.

You have to get tuff with these people because,  being akin to thugs, brute force is (metaphorically speaking).   the only thing they understand.

    *67 doesn't work when you call a toll-free number.
If they won't mail proof of the debt, they're a scam. Do NOT pay them unless they mail proof of the debt. Read the very informative post by CWG40 above.

They just called me Stating I owed money from a loan taken out in 2013.  I know actually what they were talking about.  I have been being harassed by these people since then.  On a loan I never authorized.  They deposited 200.00 into a checking account I stopped using.  I got my bank statement and it said I was negative 600.00.  Cause this loan company was going into the checking account and taking money.  Fixed everything at the bank.  Spoke to a person at the loan company and gave them back the 200.00 and closed the checking account.  I have my social on lock down and is being monitored.  There is nothing submitted to collections from these people and there is no proof that I ever took a loan out.  Do not answer these people.  They are fake and a joke and they need to be shut down.

same here, just received the call an hour ago.  Phone rang, I answered and after a couple of seconds of a pause the gentleman answers John something and says how can I help you as if I called him.  I reminded him that he called me and that's when he went into he's calling from the fraud department and does my social end in ####.  Of course I said I would not confirm and what was it that he was calling about or needed.  He proceeded to get rude and rumbled off check fraud, etc.  I stopped him in his tracks and asked him what company was he representing, I guess he needed time to do a search on me because he kept  rumbling off about me being rude and I proceeded to yell over my shoulder for pencil and paper to write his information down to pass on to the officer standing in the room to obtain details on whether this was a legit call.  Wow that really ticked him off and he started over talking me and threatening to take me to court, etc. Especially when I kept asking him for his information. I just hung up, however I will be reporting.  This person has information that he should not have and that was even after I finally told him I was not the person he was looking for thinking that would raise concern, did not he had a goal and nothing was going to distract him from that goal, FRAUD, FELONY.  SMH

I also received a message from Linda Lawson in March from a different number starting the same thing. Our conversations are very similar. They think if they are call from a different number we won't put 2 and 2 together.

They called my 69 year old mother 3 times! Nice the first 2 calls, third call 2 months later and demanded payment of 700 dollars. Off from work today and calling them every 3 minutes they refer to me by my Last name. They threton me and Americans wanting money and waking up in the morning wanting to eat each other.  What infuriates me is that they are calling the elderly who are unaware of scammers

They called a family member I rarely speak to and left a message about a judgement against my social security number. When I called back, they were incredibly aggressive and rude and trying to get me to confirm my personal information, which I would not do. They kept hanging up on me and I kept calling back - then the guy gave me my whole social security number. I told him it was incorrect and that they were scam artists and he began talking over me and yelling saying he would have to file the complaint. I told him to file it and hung up the phone.
