Like Doe, they claimed they are calling from a law firm. Politely, but firmly required a call back within 72 hours in order to discuss issue before moving forward in some legal CIVIL case.  Called the number back, it sounds like they answer but nothing is said nothing is heard in the background.

scam- any hacker can get your full name address and employer from almost any information website, they try to threaten you into calling them back and giving out banking information. Any legit company wouldn't leave messages as unprofessional as these scammers. Also if you call back from the number they called you, and it just rings and rings its an automated system logging your information from your phone if you don't have the proper security on your smart phone.

Lisa is on point also a law firm will send you a letter. These are scam collectors. Anybody can get your last 4. Some times they purchase your debt from another company for cents on the dollar.

Let me add these fake firms will use real law firm names. The numbers never match up to the real firm. A real collector like i mentioned before will send you legit info. You can also look at you credit report on a free site like credit karma and see who currently owns your debt. For the most part if you're getting calls you have a debt or use to have a debt. These fake companies get the info by hacking those systems and posing as that company. Never call these companies.

First of all, no law firm will call a person "honey" when telling you that you need to call back regarding a legal action in Los Angeles county and that if I do not return their call, they would have no choice but to proceed further. If this was true, they would have sent me a letter. I am so sick and tired of these damn scammers. It had become more common place than chicken pox. I have blocked this number.

Did you receive a notice from the court that there was going to be a hearing and did you ignore it?  Did you receive a notice from the court that there is a judgement against you?  Have you contacted the courthouse to find out if there is a judgement against you?  If you answered no to all those questions then the only thing you should be doing is calling the local courthouse (which may be closed) to find out the answer to that question.  This is a debt collection extortion scam.  The more they can scare you the easier it will be to get you to pay them money to make it "go away".  Extortion does not work like that.

It is incumbent upon them under the law to prove that the debt exists and that you owe it, and (this is the important part) that they have the legal right to collect it.  You are not obligated under the law to prove that you don’t owe or that it is paid.

Federal law (FDCPA) requires them to send you a letter (US MAIL ONLY) postmarked within 5 days of their first contact that contains their name, physical address, the creditor’s name, and the amount of the alleged debt. It also must contains “mini-Miranda” telling you that it is an attempt to collect a debt and that all information will be used for those purposes.  The one other important thing that this letter must also have in it is that you have a right to dispute the debt within 30 days of receipt of the letter and if you do so, all collection activity must be stopped until the debt is verified.  If and when you get that letter you should immediately send that debt validation letter by certified, return receipt mail.

First, you should make a complaint at this Federal Agency, and while there you should also read up on how debt collection is supposed to work as well as what your rights in this matter are: https://www.consumerfinance.gov/

Also file complaints with the FTC: https://www.ftccomplaintassistant.gov/#crnt&panel1-1

Also file a complaint with your State Attorney General's office.
