Valid number.  Check fraud.

Um, have you actually called that number? Or, call the main HSBC number to verify the number?
This number is valid. I occasionally get calls from this number when I write big checks. They also called me when there was an attempt to charge my debit card in Mexico.

This is a legitimate number from HSBC.  Received a call (actually two, first they left a message and then they called back) from this number today regarding a check I wrote.  Caller stated she was from HSBC Check Fraud Prevention and had details regarding a check I had recently written.  When I verified the check, she said she would make a notation on my account that the check was valid.  I was paranoid about having answered security questions on the phone, so I then called the HSBC main customer service number and they were able to verify the notation on my account and that it was placed today.  If it were a phishing scam, there's no way the lady on the phone could have put a notation onto my account - only bank employees can do that.  They were not able to find the number 866-839-9154 in their system, but I'm still 100% sure it's legit based on having the notation on my account.

NEVER GIVE OUT YOUR PERSONAL INFORMATION.  I called HSBC directly and they confirmed this was a scam.  The number is not affiliated with them.  The reference number they gave me was also fake.

This is a fake #!!! No bank would ever ask you to input your CC# without identifying themselves when the call is first picked up. When I asked the woman who it was, she said HSBC.  I said, what is that?  Her response, A bank.  I asked, what does HSBC stand for?  Her response, It doesn't stand for nothing anymore, its just a bank. .... Yeah, ok... Fraud!
