- BobUnsolicited telemarketing call to my cell phone on the DNC. Another Sunset Group vacations offer for some days at Ocean Spa / Laguna Suites (with bonus at some place on Orlando). Sound familiar? But of course you have to cough up $700 in advance to hold your booking, plus it sounds like you have to pay a $69 booking fee when you want to try to go there.
All in all, the people were pleasant to talk to. Especially Robert. Kept trying to offer better and better deals, even though I never would but from an unknown company telemarketing to a cell phone on the DNC. However, it was interesting to listen to him come up with a variety of different offers to try to create a compelling reason to part with hundreds of dollars to an unknown company to a resort sight-unseen for the privilege of listening to a long-winded, high-presssure (according to ripoffreport) sales pitch for a place where I almost literally got off the plane.
It has been a couple of years since I talked to folks from down there. I got a repeated series of these "One-Time Exclusive Offers" where they won't call me again. And now it appears they are looking for another crop.
Robert, besides being talkative, was very tenacious. Normally a good thing in sales, but not so much in my case. I generally had kept these up-front-fee vacation dudes from Cancun on the line for 20-30 minutes. Robert set a new record. Had a nice little chat with him for 55 minutes. I could have kept it up longer, but my cell phone was running out of battery so I dropped the call. Seems like a helluva nice guy ordinarily, just unfortunate that he's breaking the TCPA. You know, if he lands another 7 people like me, he's going to have bad sales day. Maybe others on this site would like to join me. Maybe Robert will give me another chance at this "one-time only" offer. If history repeats itself, then the safe bet would be that they will.- Caller: Up-Front Fee Sunset/Ocean Spa/Laguna Suites Timeshare

- allencalled twice, at 3:30pm and 6:30pm. No message was left. Most likely an unsolicited call.
- BobBob here again. Wow, they called again. I guess Robert enjoyed our little 55 minute chat. Or more likely someone else in the call center. Unfortunately, I wasn't able to get the phone this time, so couldn't play with them. But, I'm sure they will try again.
Seriously, talk to these guys. As long as you can. While they are talking to you, they aren't making sales. If they aren't making sales, they will have to stop making telemarketing calls since it's no longer cost effective. Laws and new technology won't work as they are unlikely to get fined (and if they do, it's not enough) and they keep spoofing/changing numbers to avoid blocks. You have to disrupt them at their weakest link - the actual customer engagement. Keep them talking, act interested, never commit (i.e. never use the word "yes"), but never actually close a sale. I had Robert on the phone for 55 minutes last time he called. You know how many sales he made during that time? Zero. If just 7 other people out of the thousands called did that, he'd have zero sales for that day. A business can't stay in business if they have no sales.
The FCC has it wrong as they say to not answer or hang up. Even the telemarketers tell you if you're not interested to hang up. Because that's the fastest way for them to get to that call which results in a sale. By hanging up, you're actually benefiting the telemarketer, and assuring that it works enough for them to continue abusing the DNC and other laws. Especially with the auto-dialed pre-recorders. In fact, hanging up or not answering makes them more likely your number will get put back into the "return call" pool of numbers (see http://consumerist.com/2009/11/12/10-confessions-of-a-telemarketing-insider/ especially #10 and #8) . Make them answer every call, got through the whole script, answer every question, use up every minute you can - and let them hang up on you.- Caller: Up-Front Fee Sunset/Ocean Spa/Laguna Suites Timeshare

- BobAnd call back they did. Had a nice little chat with Heather this time. Same thing, you have to pay $699 to get this "special one-time offer". And toward the end of the script, I hung up. Minutes later, it's Heather again, and it's like she totally didn't get that she was talking to the same person, once again offering a special one time offer, so let her go through the whole thing again. After a waffled on buying now, she transferred me to - my buddy Robert! He didn't sweeten the deal up as much as last time, and still didn't seem to recognize me from our last conversation. He must have gotten [***] slapped a little for wasting as much time, and there wasn't as much of a natural way to keep him on the phone longer. Still, between the two calls, that was an extra 40 minutes where they had staff talking, but not making sales.
If you want, you can complain to their customer service 1-866-859-2986. If they don't want to talk to you, maybe their reservations desk at 1-866-859-2983 would be willing to help you out.
Robert claims they own the resorts (Ocean Spa, Laguna Beach, Sunset Royal, Sunset Marina) and there are a lot of Rip-off reports where people are reporting that they lied etc at http://www.ripoffreport.com/reports/directory/sunset-group Typically it sounds like that little '90-minutes sales presentation' ends up taking about 4 -5 hours of high-pressure sales. You know, the kind of 3rd degree where you'll almost sign anything just to get out of the sales presentation.
I wonder when they will call again. I'm almost looking forward to chatting with Robert again. He's from Nebraska. Maybe we can talk football like old college buddies.- Caller: Sunset Group
