They called but didn't leave a msg.  I called back and the call greeting said it was American Express.

I have received messages, but never returned the call because the message has so much static over the voice at the beginning, you can't hear what they are saying. The clarity mysteriously improves when they leave a number to return the call.
I won't call back just out of curiosity, and all the messages I've received are similar - heavy static followed by a phone number.

I get calls from this number at all times of the day.  They never left a message until today.  It was a recorded message where a female with an English accent said she wanted to talk to me about an important matter and left a number.  I don't even have an amex!  It's my ex-husbands!

Got the same call. Read these posts and called the number. I did not give an account number so a live person came on and asked for it. Told her I was returning a call from them and she hung up on me! It appears they are phishing for account information for no good reason.

Got a call on my cell answered it hung up. My wife immediately got a call from that number!

Once again  3rd call today from yet another number.  No message left.  When thye stop having their computers call people i may actually respond to them!

Since I started getting calls from this and other numbers within 90 minutes of entering my corporate AMEX card into our corporate travel system and this was the only place that my mobile and AMEX crossed, I reported this to our security as a possible breach.  I also contacted the number on the back of my card and the agent said that it wasn't AMEX.  However, the information I received from our corporate security is that it was and I probably should answer the next call and find out what they wanted.  Either a data entry clerk made an error in data entry  or someone entered your phone number as their contact information or they are relying on an old number - the AMEX agent I talked to said their system goes back 20 years.  Since this is my mobile and I've had the number for the last 10 years and i don't think it existed prior to me getting it, I suspect either a data entry error or someone purposely did not give the right phone number in my case.

866-884-0976   American Express.. calling from numerous phone numbers, this being one not identified on caller id.. just says "toll free". They leave a message to call about an important message blah blah but we do not even have an American Express card. Don't want one either !!!!

I read all of these posts about (866) 884-0976 being American Express after I received a call from this number today. Hence, I called the American Express number on the back of my card. They said I can be assured that (866) 884-0976 does not belong to their company and anytime you suspect a spammer to give American Express a call and they can verify if you received a call from American Express.

AmEx # left no msg...called about 7:30pm

Someone from this number called and identified themselves as AMEX.  They asked for my husband's ex-wife.  I laughed and realized it must be a scam.  They have been calling my home several times per day for 4-5 days.  They have left messages with a different 888 number to call back regarding an important message from AMEX.  When I call the number, they want my AMEX credit card number.  What kind of fool gives out this information over the phone to an unknown?

It's a scam - American express said that the number (866) 884-0976 is not from them.  Interestingly enough, when I refused to give my number to the scammer, they actually suggested I call American Express using the number on the back of the card.  The only thing I can think of is that they thought I'd change my mind and give it to them...

I just called American Express, as I've been getting a minimum of 2 calls a day from this number, which I've blocked.  The American Express rep actually called the number to see who was making these calls. Amex said they are legit, it's marketing people from American Express calling to extend "offers".  They said you need to "opt out" of marketing offers when you sign up for their card. The rep revised my account to "opt out" of their marketing.

I received 2 calls from this # today and no message was left the first time and I answered the 2nd call. They said they were from AmEx and wanted to speak to me about my platinum card's $18,000 balance that was due today!!! I don't have a platinum card and when I told them that they asked me to verify some information for them. I told them to give me the info and I'd confirm what they have and they said its ok, we'll take you off our call list if you say you don't have one! Yeah, right... they're just going to let me off the hook for $18,000! I called AmEx and they said it was not from them and not to give my info to anyone!!!

received a call, no message, nothing, so what I did, called back, muted the microphone and just sat back and relaxed!
So with phone-calls like this one, call them back and do not talk, mute your microphone and just keep doing your stuff....meaning do to them what they do to you! or use multiple devices to call them at the same time and just sit back and enjoy!
Something even better, forward their call to their number!!! That should be interesting! a brilliant idea from a friend!!! take care.....
