Got a call and a subsequent fax from someone saying they were my Verizon provider calling to renew my contract (verbally). I was suspicious. The fax cover sheet had the Verizon logo but no address or even the agent's last name. After I told them I didn't believe they were Verizon they told me to have a nice day and hung up. The 866-961-6684 number is the one on the fax they said for me to call to renew my contract.

Just got the same call.  I googled the number and found your post.  I am sure it is just a phishing scam.

Be very careful with these companies, I just received a call from this number as well.  About a year ago I was scammed by a company just like this.  They claim to be calling "on behalf of Verizon" and they would like to update the account to renew the contract at the most current/discounted rates.  I made the mistake of believing them and confirming my company information.  I didn't find out until I received my next months bill that I was scammed and my long distance service was changed to some unknown company and I was charged for every long distance call.  After a very long phone call to Verizon they finally fixed my bill and switched my service back to their unlimited long distance plan.  Verizon confirmed that they do not hire other companies to call their customers like these companies claim.  Now I just hang up on them because I'm afraid any thing I say can authorize them to change my account.

You are fully entitled to only pay the rates you had previously agreed upon in these circumstances.  Further, you can request the LEC (Local Exchange Carrier who provides your dial tone) credit any fees associated to initially transfer your line to the scammers as well as any fees to return your services to the appropriate company/plan.

I am not sure if LEC seeks reimbursement from the scammers but obviously the more work the LEC's have to complete without reimbursement the more they will clamor for better regulation.  Right now, it is very easy for these clowns to manipulate your phone conversation with them and have a "3rd party verification company" confirm you're switching your long distance service companies, which meets the FCC's requirements.  I have had state Public Utilities Commissions tell me telemarketers can make any false claims that they want as long as they have a recording of you verifying your full name, phone number and address as well as your authority to change services.

Further, request a PIC/LPIC freeze on any lines you have.  This should require written approval to change services.  However, bear in mind that you will be charged fees for any change in service so some LEC's are better than others at enforcing the rules.

I spoke to Verizon and they said it is indeed a Verizon number.  They are "telemarketers" who call people to tell them to renew their lines.

The supervisor there (at the 866-961-6684 #) refused to give me a mailing address for his office, and simply asked for a verbal agreement over the phone.  I think Verizon should reconsider the way they inform their customers of line renewal.

I recieved a call from "Verizon Solutions Provider" last week. This happened last year, also. I requested all info to be faxed to me. There was no logo and no address. It said I was paying a certain price per line and I'm up for renewal. I called Verizon, the fee I am currently paying is actually less and I'm not up for renewal. They said if it were Verizon, I would recieve a notice from one of two local offices. When "866-961-6684" called back (I won't use his real name), he said he was from Texas, but wouldn't give his address. He started to but was told he couldn't for "security" reasons. BE CAREFULL. Always get it in writing, and never say "YES" to anyone over the phone.

Verizon may offer the toll free number to the company but that doesn't mean it's a Verizon department. This just means the company uses the Verizon toll free service...the line that the 800# turns into (telephone number) could be owned by some one else (qwest, at&T)....as long as they pay their bills...

They have been harrasing me for weeks now with implied threats that my service will be cut off if I don't respond. The number that they claim to be renewing is not even mine, it belongs to a business 100 miles away in another state!

Onvisource is a legit company working on behalf of Verizon. It is not a scam. Verizon partners with many outsource companies to do their outbound calling to their business customers. It is all verifiable by looking on https://www22.verizon.com/indirectsales/findvzpartner.aspx. From there you will find Find a Verizon Solutions Partner. From there you will find VGS
    Web Site: http://www.vgei.com.
Venture Group Enterprises is the company who has the "master contract" with Verizon. VGE subcontracts about 20 other companies who do the same exact thing as Onvisource. Believe it or not, Onvisource has a very strict policy in effect. There are no lies aloud. When we are on the phone with customers, we are to say "I am calling on behalf of Verizon." I do assure you that the few agents who have said they were Verizon in the past, were discharged. Also, Onvisource employees do not work strictly off of commission. We actually get a very good base pay. The commission that so very little, it is not even important to the employees. Another thing, every single call is recorded. There is no way for an agent to turn off the recorder. So, to sum it up, we do work on behalf of Verizon to renew your existing service agreement that is expired or is up for renewal within the next 6 months. We are not allowed to renew an account that is more than 6 months out. Also if your account is renewed by Onvisource, it does not take effect until your current term expires. Also, you can verify that you have the custopak, centrex or centranet service by looking on your Verizon Business Telephone bills. It is clearly stated under the monthly recurring and nonrecurring charges section of your bill. It will also show your term length and initiation date. Another thing, is that if you call Verizon directly, most of the customer services do not know anything about outsourcers, and you would surely need to speak to a supervisor to ask more direct questions regarding this. Also, think about it, a customer service rep earns commission, of course they want you to renew your services with them directly!!! It is true that if you are in a term agreement with Verizon, that if you do not renew the term, your line rates will be increased to the current month to month rates, which can be significantly higher than what you currently pay. We may even offer you the multi line bundle which is a flat rate for you combined local telephone services, long distance and dsl or fios services. It may or may not save you money. We can not tell you that it will be saving you money if it won't. Think about it, if we were going to scam you, why would we say in the confirmation that we are renewing your Verizon services and even give you the early termination fees and all the correct information. Also, if you doubt it, ask the agent to pull up your bill. Obviously, if we can pull up all of your bills and service information we are Authorized Verizon Solution Providers. For anyone who has had a bad experience with a Onvisource should call in and speak to a supervisor, because we do take our contract with VGE/ Verizon very serious and shady agents are disciplined up to including discharged immediately. Before you slander our company, you should do the research.

I received a fax from someone representing "Business Solutions Group", saying that they are "Centurylink Master Agent". It was a quote for a bundled package at a 3 year locked in price. It smells of scam after reading all these replies. First it is Verizon, now it is Century Link. I wish there was something that could be done about these scammers, it is just a waste of time.

Received one of these calls saying they needed to update my service with Centurylink because of previous change from Embarq.  Very persistent.  I told them we weren't interested, hung up and later found that the same person had left a voice mail insisting that I call her back.  This type of scam should be illegal.

I have been getting calls from this Business solutions group and they are very insistant that they are an agent for CenturyLink. I emailed customer service at CenturyLink and they said that they are not partners or agents with this group at all. I told the sales person this and he said I was wrong!!  Yeah right!! He wanted to give me a number for CenturyLink so I could verify their association, oh sure, how dumb do they think we are? This group is full of it!!
