If people KNOW they owe the money - they can't just take the word of a random stranger saying they owe that money to them - which is why the FDCPA REQUIRES that debt collectors MAIL that proof of debt/proof they can collect said debt to the alleged debtor.  Put up or shut up!

I may agree with you there, but that still doesn't give people the right to not pay their debts. People like you have a rebuttal for everything! Yet you have nothing to show for worthless existence, except a snarky attitude and a EBT card.

LOL, you don't know anything about me!  (Early retired, no debts owed except regular monthly bills.)  Anyway, no one here says people should not pay legitimate debts, only that they make sure that their callers actually own the debt they say they do (which is where the validation letter which is required, comes in).  However, none of these posters states they owe anything - and scammers do scam people out of money by the same law-breaking calls and threats that you seem to think are OK.  They are not OK.

As for "snarky attitude and a EBT card" I have neither.  Not that there's anything wrong with people needing assistance, however YOU should lose YOUR attitude.

I'm sure whatever company you owe would be happy to provide you with the proof. I'm also sure they already sent you a validation letter, which you most likely ignored. Question....do you ask your mortgage company or your landlord for proof you owe them $$ everytime your rent/mortgage is due and you can't pay that?

You don't read too well, do you?  I don't owe any bills except regular monthly bills (paid ahead of time, automatically).  And your example is apples to oranges.

    http://www.consumer.ftc.gov/articles/0258-fake-debt-collectors

Consumers across the country report that they're getting telephone calls from people trying to collect on loans the consumers never received or on loans they did receive but for amounts they do not owe. Others are receiving calls from people seeking to recover on loans consumers received but where the creditors never authorized the callers to collect for them. So what's the story?

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC), the nation's consumer protection agency, is warning consumers to be on the alert for scam artists posing as debt collectors. It may be hard to tell the difference between a legitimate debt collector and a fake one. Sometimes a fake collector may even have some of your personal information, like a bank account number. A caller may be a fake debt collector if he:

    is seeking payment on a debt for a loan you do not recognize;
    refuses to give you a mailing address or phone number;
asks you for personal financial or sensitive information; or
exerts high pressure to try to scare you into paying, such as threatening to have you arrested or to report you to a law enforcement agency.
If you think that a caller may be a fake debt collector:
Ask the caller for his name, company, street address, and telephone number. Tell the caller that you refuse to discuss any debt until you get a written "validation notice." The notice must include the amount of the debt, the name of the creditor you owe, and your rights under the federal Fair Debt Collection Practices Act.
If a caller refuses to give you all of this information, do not pay! Paying a fake debt collector will not always make them go away. They may make up another debt to try to get more money from you.

Stop speaking with the caller. If you have the caller's address, send a letter demanding that the caller stop contacting you, and keep a copy for your files. By law, real debt collectors must stop calling you if you ask them to in writing.
Do not give the caller personal financial or other sensitive information. Never give out or confirm personal financial or other sensitive information like your bank account, credit card, or Social Security number unless you know whom you're dealing with. Scam artists, like fake debt collectors, can use your information to commit identity theft – charging your existing credit cards, opening new credit card, checking, or savings accounts, writing fraudulent checks, or taking out loans in your name.
Contact your creditor. If the debt is legitimate – but you think the collector may not be – contact your creditor about the calls. Share the information you have about the suspicious calls and find out who, if anyone, the creditor has authorized to collect the debt.
Report the call. Contact the FTC and your state Attorney General's office with information about suspicious callers. Many states have their own debt collection laws in addition to the federal FDCPA. Your Attorney General's office can help you determine your rights under your state's law.

    >> what is the point of requesting a validation?  <<

I had some, faint hope you were not a mere shilly troll, and might actually be looking for information.  However you seem to be making invalid arguments, just for the fun of it.  Suggest you stop wiggling in your chair ... something unanticipated might happen.

    1) Called "debtors" need not =request= a validation notice.  The collector MUST, by law, send the written (snailmailed) letter within 5 days of first contact.

    2) Elspeth's (and others') comments are correct.  Even though somebody knows they owe money, they may not owe it to the collector who calls.  Also, in many cases, the called person owes no money!

    3) You still have not given us any info about the collection company whose calls you are defending.  Your generalized (and mostly incorrect) statements are nugatory, and quite similar to other, recent,  "pay your bills" trollish statements made under different IDs.  Are you looking for a job?

    4) You have no proof that any of us owe money, even though you have made that accusation.

Unfortunately, many will continue to feed the troll ... but the entertainment value of your multiple posts has dropped considerably, along with the absence of factual content.

To ensure that they owe the money to YOU and that you are not just some petty extortionist.

That was pretty simple, wasn't it?

Now go enjoy your cigarette while you soak your head in kerosene.

Again, the company you are referring to send validation letters and abides all the laws. Anyone on here complaining is simply trying to get out of paying their debts.

Go away Troll. You're wasting your time in the hope of wasting ours. We can see through jokes like you faster than you can remember your latest alias. The "uneducated" people on this board are why you're here. You know that we're smarter, far more educated, vastly better paid & have the time to cripple fraudulent debt collection outfits. We cost you money. We educate people. You can't stop that. Thanks to the scum employed in the 3rd party, and bogus, debt collection industry more people are aware of the regulations that are in place to protect them. What was once a multi-billion dollar business is now floundering. Not even a republican president is going to be able to change that. Not that there's a possibility of that. This coming from a man who spent most of his adult life as a registered republican......
We all know what started the last recession. Guess what? It wasn't the people that didn't pay their bills. Would you like to debate the matter with me? Please do. That recession is over. This country is back & the people in it are scraping their way back to where they should have been if the administrations that catered to the rise of fraudulent debt collection hadn't been in place for far too long.
It sounds like your economic situation is in a bad state. Perhaps if you'd contemplated a more honorable line of employment you wouldn't be in those straits. Sitting in a cubicle trying to blow smoke up peoples posteriors just isn't what it used to be. Your base pay remains the same, the commissions aren't coming in. People do pay their bills. They just don't pay frauds that think trying to collect on invalid debt is a real job. Get used to it. It's going to get worse for you.
The public is becoming better informed. The agencies that have sat dormant are being spurred. There are people, and attorneys, that have decided that fraudulent debt collection agencies are easy prey and a lot of fun to track down & feed off of. For some it has become just the thrill of the hunt. So tell me Troll? A recession? Yes, perhaps in your case it is.

And you are the biggest idiot in this thread --- if you think that the Great Recession of 2007 had more to do with consumer debt than over-leveraged investments banks,  I feel sorry for you.  I would welcome the chance to debate economics with an hubristic person like yourself, but I wouldn't get too far since you think probably think John Maynard Keynes was a 70s funk signer and Milton Friedman an actor

The first poster in this thread stated mthat they were called by hydra Financial.  In a quick web search, this is what I have found:
The CFPB has sued them:  http://www.consumerfinance.gov/newsroom/cfpb- ... cash-grab-scam/
This is a link to their alleged locations under the different alias they go by:  http://www.online-payday-loans.org/contact-info/djr-group-llc/

Damn SK, I'm still giggling! We're a select bunch here. What do you think of that guy from New Jerseys chances? Yuk,Yuk!
Economics & Political Science aren't discussed much here. I guess they shouldn't be. Dis' not be da' place.
I'm going with Pat Paulson again this time. He has (had) a Scandinavian name, he's been dead for years & so, obviously, he is  far more qualified to be the leader of this fine nation than any other contender at this time.

Hope all is well with you Gunnar!  I figured I had to call that troll out --- I'm thinking more WNY than Jersey.  The WNY trolls have a habit of trying to blame the recessions on "deadbeat debtors" who don't pay back fictitious PDLs and like to make snarky remarks alleging that those who disagree with them are welfare recipients.

In any case, guy was a half-wit who made Defective Ron look like a Ph.D.

From an earlier message by "Responsible Consumer:"

    >>> Again, the company you are referring to send validation letters and abides all the laws. <<<

That's an assertion that could only be made by someone who is connected with "the company you are referring to," as are other assertions of his (e.g., "Def not a scam.")  And the failure of "Responsible Consumer" to disclose which company "the company you are referring to" really is appears to be an act of cowardliness in trying to hide his connection to this company.

In which case, I submit to you, solely for discussion purposes, that this shill's posts themselves may be in violation of Section 5 of the Federal Trade Commission Act (15 U.S.C. 45) as regards the use of endorsements and testimonials in advertising, for failure to disclose his material connection to the company he is endorsing.  See 16 C.F.R. 255, and in particular, the guideline given as Example 8 in section 255.5.

    See:
    http://www.ftc.gov/sites/default/files/attach ... ementguides.pdf
    for all the gory details.

Again, the above does not constitute a legal opinion, and is provided for discussion purposes only.

    Very good!

I wonder how many other IDs  or otiose posts the shill might use here, to attempt to continue their disinformation.
(Hey, if you like "nugatory", you will love "otiose")  (grin)

Ah but now SK, I miss old Ronnie. The last couple of crews we ran down in my back pasture weren't nearly as entertaining. Ronnie just bailed. He "liquidated' his "assets" & sank in to the oblivion of nothingness. The next couple of jokers got spanked. The crew after that got nailed hard...& then the operator got his *** & his assets locked up. After that his crew got processed...again.
We've had a recent issue with a couple of miscreants. Rather disappointing really. A couple of scrubs have been running an outfit out of Atl. A western suburb actually. One I'm extremely familiar with. They run (ran) something off of 5 in Douglasville. One of their more intellectually challenged shills showed up. That wasn't a good idea. You know how the scenario would have run. It didn't. It turns out that they were already being watched. A Lawrenceville duo being backed by a "New Yawker". Will wonders ever cease?
My best to you SK. Prayers & wishes to you & yours. Clean that chimney. Santa gets pissed when he has to brush the deer AND himself!
