There is a fairly common IRS or "tax scam" being practiced by scammers in both Canada and the USA.
USA tax payers should read this:
    http://www.irs.gov/uac/Tax-Scams-Consumer-Alerts
Note particularly the links at that site, warning of the scam!

A shorter explanation is Scam  #11, as shown at
    http://phonehelp.2truth.com/facts.html

That site also shows how other 800notes visitors have reduced the number of telephone scams and telemarketing calls they receive. (That site also has a link to Amazon's phone blocker devices and apps, as well as a page showing various government sites that accept complaints or warn about scams.)

Received a call today from this number around 12:45 PM....a man with a very thick and almost understandable accent stated my name correctly and he was from (indistinguishable) company...then something about courts and to call back ASAP. I did not attempt to call back, but sounds like a tax scam.

Message yesterday, heavy accent speaker. "IRS tax audit--court----arrest". Usual scam stuff. Called back today. I told caller I knew this was a scam and hung up. They called back 3 more times threatening arrest and jail. I notified the real IRS on their tax scam number found at www.irs.gov. I hope somebody does go to jail, last I heard impersonating a government official was illegal.

I got the call from this number today. Similar message as the one described here. It asked me to call 18669206544. I checked the ID and the call in number was 18669786544, I call the later and someone called Brand Smith introdused himself as IRS. He told me that they have been trying to reach me via mail as I was being acused for tax evasion since September 2013 but the letters have been returning back because there was no one to receive them so they decided to send the case to the federal court, but they called me to offer me a last chance. I told them that I need to check with my lawyer and will call them back (intentionally to see their reaction). His reply was: You can do as you wish sir but if you don't settle now you this phone will be disconnected and the case will go straight to court. That's when I started using french and he hanged up the phone. I wish I could get my hands on one of them.

I got a call from this number about a month ago, very threatening (that the IRS would arrest me for tax evasion). I ignored it. This week I got a very similar call from this number, with a similar threat. This was followed by a call from area code 850 with a name and threat.  Are these scammers trying to scare people? Since i have not committed any kind of crime, I should not worry, right? The calls are upsetting nevertheless, and I believe their purpose is to upset people.

I just received three calls from them this morning - let two go to voice-mail and finally answered the third to tell them to remove me from their call list (I know, I need to sign up for the 'do-not-call' service.)  I echo everything posted previously.  But, what is their gain other than to scare people?  They represented they were from the Internal Revenue Service and all.  I spoke to two people - both had very thick accents, so I was suspicious the whole time....but none-the-less it is unsettling.  What is their ultimate gain from this?

[***] pretending to be the IRS to try to scam my dad. Voicemail stating that some sort of tax fraud lawsuit was put against my dad. Luckily I knew it was fake right away because they didn't use his legal name. Called them 5 times back and they gave me five different case numbers and five different amounts that I owed the IRS. They couldn't verify nothing. After the fifth time when i called them out on their [***], he hung up on me. Then 10 minutes later, I get a phone call from 216-586-4455 from the same person pretending to be a police officer. Said he would be at my house in 45 minutes to arrest me and have sex with my mother. Sneaky [***]. Sent an email to the actual IRS to report what happened.
