Said it was IRS and they were going to confiscate our property-which we don't owe the IRS

I received the same thing but they said we would be arrested and liens would be attached to our property

Scam phone number pretending to be IRS. Don't give them anything.

"so in the next 24 hours we will be marking a lien on your bank accounts and assets until you settle your debt with the IRS.  A counselor will bring paperwork to your home to be signed."     SO BOGUS!  HOW CAN THEY GET AWAY WITH THIS!  They called me 3 times in one day.

The scammer is calling from outside the US, out of reach of US law enforcement.  Block the calls.  If the calls are coming to a land line you can buy a call-blocking device at Best Buy or a similar store.  If they are calling your cell ask your phone company how to block the calls.

Do consider maybe getting a call blocking device or phone.. You can google them and many are around $50.00 or so.If its a cell phone, some already have call blocking, if not, there are free apps on the web that will work for some. You can google this. If you have a smart phone, there is a free app called call control. Iphones appear to have apps also. Another one is called Mr. Number.

They called twice in less than five minutes saying that they were going to put a lien on our property and freeze our bank accounts.  The IRS knows our name and wouldn't give anybody an opportunity to run or hide assets.  The phone number they called is a secret landline in my house that nobody ever uses and we don't give that number to others.

Automated call saying that they were the IRS and that because of unsettled debts with them, they would be confiscating assets.  

Since I know that I don't owe the IRS anything, I hung up.

WASHINGTON — The Internal Revenue Service today warned consumers about a sophisticated phone scam targeting taxpayers, including recent immigrants, throughout the country.

Victims are told they owe money to the IRS and it must be paid promptly through a pre-loaded debit card or wire transfer. If the victim refuses to cooperate, they are then threatened with arrest, deportation or suspension of a business or driver’s license. In many cases, the caller becomes hostile and insulting.

“This scam has hit taxpayers in nearly every state in the country.  We want to educate taxpayers so they can help protect themselves.  Rest assured, we do not and will not ask for credit card numbers over the phone, nor request a pre-paid debit card or wire transfer,” says IRS Acting Commissioner Danny Werfel. “If someone unexpectedly calls claiming to be from the IRS and threatens police arrest, deportation or license revocation if you don’t pay immediately, that is a sign that it really isn’t the IRS calling.” Werfel noted that the first IRS contact with taxpayers on a tax issue is likely to occur via mail
Other characteristics of this scam include:
Scammers use fake names and IRS badge numbers. They generally use common names and surnames to identify themselves.
Scammers may be able to recite the last four digits of a victim’s Social Security Number.
Scammers spoof the IRS toll-free number on caller ID to make it appear that it’s the IRS calling.
Scammers sometimes send bogus IRS emails to some victims to support their bogus calls.
Victims hear background noise of other calls being conducted to mimic a call site.
After threatening victims with jail time or driver’s license revocation, scammers hang up and others soon call back pretending to be from the local police or DMV, and the caller ID supports their claim.
If you get a phone call from someone claiming to be from the IRS, here’s what you should do:
If you know you owe taxes or you think you might owe taxes, call the IRS at 1.800.829.1040. The IRS employees at that line can help you with a payment issue – if there really is such an issue.
If you know you don’t owe taxes or have no reason to think that you owe any taxes (for example, you’ve never received a bill or the caller made some bogus threats as described above), then call and report the incident to the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration at 1.800.366.4484.
If you’ve been targeted by this scam, you should also contact the Federal Trade Commission and use their “FTC Complaint Assistant” at FTC.gov.  Please add "IRS Telephone Scam" to the comments of your complaint.
Taxpayers should be aware that there are other unrelated scams (such as a lottery sweepstakes) and solicitations (such as debt relief) that fraudulently claim to be from the IRS.
The IRS encourages taxpayers to be vigilant against phone and email scams that use the IRS as a lure. The IRS does not initiate contact with taxpayers by email to request personal or financial information.  This includes any type of electronic communication, such as text messages and social media channels. The IRS also does not ask for PINs, passwords or similar confidential access information for credit card, bank or other financial accounts. Recipients should not open any attachments or click on any links contained in the message. Instead, forward the e-mail to phishing@irs.gov.

I received the same messages on my tele.all of these posts show.  So glad I Googled the #866-978-6754 & found this Forum.  Thank you all for all of your comments on how to handle these IRS scammers.

Stated they where calling from the IRS and where going to place lien on house and bank accounts.

Got the same message and called back.  Said  they audited 2008-2012 and found I intentally misrepresented my income. Within 24 hours sieze all assests, bank accounts, home, wages

Received at least 5 messages on my answering machine. When I called back they got very hostile and said if we didn't pay for the taxes we owed immediately they were going to send the police right now to arrest me and my husband.  Why can't the IRS have this number shut down?

MADISON, Wis. -

Two people reported being scammed out of money last week by callers claiming to be from state or local organizations after officials warned of the scams.

A 22-year-old Madison woman said she was scammed out of $400 when a caller claimed to be with the IRS, according to a release from Madison police. The woman was told she owed $35,000 to the government and would be arrested if she didn’t buy a Green Dot credit card.

It wasn’t until after she provided the card’s number to the person calling from the number 866-978-6754 that she realized she had fallen for the common phone scam.

Another Madison woman told police she was scammed out of $500 by a person claiming to be with the Dane County Sheriff’s Office.

The 66-year-old said she thought the call didn’t make sense, but for some reason she went along with it.

The caller told her she missing signing up for grand jury duty and that there was going to be warrants out for her arrest, police said. The caller told her to clear the warrants she needed to preload money on a Green Dot card.

A Madison police officer, who responded to the 66-year-old’s fraud complaint, called the number, 608-293-1318, at talked to someone claiming to be Lt. Fred Burns, according to the release. The officer told the man she was working with the victim to get things straightened out and wanted to know if they could meet in person.

The man claiming to Lt. Burns said they could meet at 110 E. Main St., but the officer informed him that was the location of a condo, not a law enforcement agency, officials said. The call was then forwarded to someone claiming to be Capt. Dalton who gave the officer similar information. The officer eventually hung up.

they have already called twice today. first time a recording something like this: this is automated message from IRS. then said they were going to put leins on property in "your name"  (they didn't say the actual name) and sending agent to my house to have papers signed. and to call them back immediately at another number 866-978-5847.  hopefully someone can figure out who owns the 2nd number here?

We also received the following voice mail message.  "so in the next 24 hours we will be marking a lien on your bank accounts and assets until you settle your debt with the IRS.  A counselor will bring paperwork to your home to be signed."  We received voice messages every two hours, regarding this activity.

We reported this activity to the telephone company for further investigation.  

FYI- IRS does not call with this indicated proceedural activity.  Nor does IRS send representative(s) to individual locations.
