The caller, Megan Lee from the FCPA in Washington D.C. said to return her call at (866) 978-6845.  My caller ID said she called from (202) 391-0978.

Someone calling himself James Anderson said he was calling from the new Federal Consumer Protection Agency.  He said he was holding two checks for me from a magazine sweepstakes.  They were allegedly for $486,000.00 each and were drawn on the Bank of America.  However, since I never entered a sweepstakes of any kind, ever, he said that I would have to pay 1% of the second check in order for them to be released to me.  That's $4860.00.  I told him I don't have that kind of money.  He asked if I had a major credit card.  I said "Yes, but I'm not going to use them for something this fishy.  Why can't I have my two checks. call BOA to verify their authenticity, and then you can have your 1%."  He transferred me to a help dept. who would explain why that's not possible.  The girl at that dept. sounded like a high-school dropout, so I hung up.

There was no information in the caller ID.  But Mr. Anderson asked that I call him back in I had any further questions.  1-866-978-6845, Ext. 201.  Security code # EP7886.  I never called back, but I'm tempted, just to see what story they'll cook up this time.
