A man with a very strong accent called my hard of hearing grandmother. She wrote the # from her caller ID down but couldn't hear the man well enough to tell what was said.

I've been receiving calls at all hours of the day and night (3:30 am, 5:30 am, 6:30 am, 10:30 pm, you name it) since before Thanksgiving 2008. The caller has a Jamaican accent and says he has a check (sometimes he says he has a package) for me and it's very urgent. He has said he's from Global..something and today he said he was "John Mayers" from United Purchasing Exchange. I knew it was a scam from the 1 call in November so I ignore the calls. He tells me to call and 876 area code number (876 is the area code for Jamaica and doesn't require "011" for international calls. The number he provides is never the number he's calling from. I Googled this found out this is a widespread scam. I'm not elderly but the ones who get scammed are elderly people. These scammers don't stop no matter what and sometimes threaten those they call. I have a new mobile phone that has a Night Mode option that allows me to set the time period I don't want my phone to ring. These scammers were disrupt my sleep & my life as well as that of my 86 year old mother, who I take care of. I don't know how to stop them so this new phone is a God send with it's Night Mode option! BEWARE OF THESE 876 AREA CODE CALLS AND DO NOT CALL THE NUMBER THEY TELL YOU BECAUSE I READ YOU'LL GET CHARGED ON YOUR PHONE BILL FOR INTERNATIONAL RATES.
