- But then replies to Shannon| 2 repliesyou can't be sure it really was them. After all, you did look up the number even though you know who called you, didn't you? If you were 100% sure it was them, you certainly wouldn't have taken the time to do that since there would have been no reason to do it.
- qwerty replies to Shannon| 1 replyThe calls showing this number as the caller ID may be legit for some, and not legit for others. Why? Because scammers can easily spoof a legit number in order to further their scams. So some people posting here may have received a legit call from CIBC at this number, and others may have received a call from scammers spoofing this CIBC number. I agree with you 100% on your comment to always call the number on the back of your card in cases like this.
- ThomasJust called PC Financial and they verified this was the right number. You can call too but you're wasting your time.

- CWG40The large number of shillers basically posting to tell everyone how "legit" this number is, is pretty strong evidence of a scam. I count 14 shill posts out of a total of 25 entries on this thread. Works out to a 56 percent shill rate. Clear evidence of a scam.
This number is most likely part of a larger fraud campaign targeting the customers of large-scale financial or commercial institutions.
The large number of phony posts claiming the call is real, is evidence of con artists spamming the site to try to fool people. At a 56% shill rate, there should be no question that this is part of a scam. At least that's the way I see it based on my own research. I've seen percentages go even higher.
This scam is well documented. Simply google it out. Based on my research this scam has been going on since about 2008.
T hese type of calls follow a similar pattern. They all claim to be from groups like Chase, Citibank, Bank of America, Fifth Third Bank, US Bank, Wells Fargo, RBC, PayPal, etc as well as Credit Unions. Or claim to be CC processors. Or “Fraud Detection”. All with the same type of postings. All claiming there is something wrong with your card or that some questionable purchase has been made. Or something similar. They all ask for personal or personal financial information.
Just part of the shillers criminal MO.
I've noticed the shill posters often use the same turns of phrase. Same old, same old verbiage telling everyone how "legit" the calls are.
Personally I think the group or groups posting this shillage-spillage are located in either the US or Canada, or perhaps both. They may also be working with scammers outside of North America.
In any event , never give out any personal or financial information to anyone who cold calls you. If there are any problems with your card, always call the number on the back of the card or the official number on the monthly statement you receive.
Call history on 800notes for this type of scam, so far. (That I’ve been able to find.)

- CWG40| 1 replyNow watch. In just a short space of time there'll be at least three or more shillage entries telling us how "legit" the call is.

- Leah| 2 repliesI called the # on the back of my card instead of # of caller. It was CIBC fraud prevention that had left me the message. I had tried to purchase a bunch of stuff on Amazon by paying once for whole cart of items, but then amazon broke the orders up one for each seller. So I had entered my card number once but amazon entered it like 15 times. However, I had not realized I didn't really have enough money in my account, so CIBC saw it as someone trying 15 times to use the card. They cleared the block on my card now that I have talked to them. The thing that was weird is that CIBC waits 3 weeks to block the card and call me after suspicious behaviour!! What if it actually was a thief? Anyway, call is legit.
- Caller: CIBC
- Call type: Valid
- Leah replies to But then| 1 replyI went and looked it up quickly first when got the message, before I actually called the number on the back of my card to confirm with them the number. Never called the number in voicemail. The back confirmed it was indeed because of suspicious behaviour on my card.
- Leah replies to LeahI mean *bank
- JLSIt was bizarre because I had just set up my CIBC Credit Card online access and within an hour I had a call reporting fraud on my CIBC debit card (I don't have a CIBC debit card). I investigated and decided to call the number on back of credit card and was put through to fraud detection. No issues with my card. That phone number is not on file to deal with CIBC Fraud issues. Beware when getting this. I am calling this one fraud.
- Caller: said they were CIBC Fraud... they are not
- Call type: Scam suspicion
- Michael| 1 reply100% legit. Just called the # on my card and they verified it's all legit. This is CIBC.
- MikeHuntleton replies to MichaelLucky for you that your call was legitimate, but you can't say that everyone's caller will be, can you?
Thats right, you CAN"T!
Scammers spoof names/numbers daily and no one can be certain if someone else's caller will be legit or a scammer. So your "verification" is 100% worthless to anyone other than you.
Never trust a caller to be who they claim, always call from an official number to verify if they did call. - KirkCalled at 1 am and asked personal info
