This is a screening company likely called for rental references.  If they are able they leave a message every time.

Perhaps you simply got a "wrong number" call, as it is a legitimate company and if you were given this number to call back, then the call was most likely meant for someone requesting verification.

Now if the caller gave some other number to call or was asking for personal info, then I would say that is a red flag. While scammers tend to spoof legitimate numbers to commit fraud, they need to get something from you they can use.  It pays to do some research before jumping the gun.

The person told me that he was checking my credit because I submitted an application for an apartment.  Although this is true, he started asking very personal questions that were very clear on my application.  Asking for my salary, and I am a retired person, and on and on.  I stopped the call because that meant to me that he did not have my application, and it could be a scam.
