I received a call earlier today. A call came to my fiance  asking to speak to me. For one how did they even get his #.? Also I've been online for last month requesting estimates  for our home project. I put our #on there .mine &his. Its just odd because I've never received a call from odor. They called my #and left voice message to call back .they said very important .they said there hours are from 7-5:15pm. It was kinda wierd 5:15? ??  I feel this may be scam. What do you think? If not a scam .why would they be calling me .I haven't filed taxes . Any ideas or advice what  could it be?

The call started with a mumbled brief message that sounded like...this is a message for - but then you couldn't really distinguish the name, because it was garbled.  They said it was from the Oregon department of revenue and it was important that I called back.  Not going to!

I received a call...hard to hear the entire message...Oregon Dept of Revenue...it stated it was important that I call back.  I live in Washington and am retired...not reason for them to be calling me...I am not going to call back I think it is a scam of some sort!

If a tax bureau wanted to contact you, they would do it by mail, not phone.

Wrong. Search Other Agency Accounts, its the Oregon Dept of Revenue and thats the toll free # if you seach Other Agency Accounts you can see its a collections of the state agencys from Courts to Colgs to Hospitals, depends on what the bills for.  Not a scam, look it up yourself.  And yes, they DO contact by mail as the first level but if you do not respond(maybe address has changed?) then the next step is by phone. Don't ignore the call, you don't want to end up in a garnishment if your working and you chose to not respond.

So why would an Oregon tax agency call someone who lives in Washington?  There is no proof that it really is this agency calling since the number can be spoofed.  What proof do you have that they call to begin with?  Why are you even trying to cast doubt?

Or is a odd one Wolfie. They will call. Usually its around tax return time, if you owe for something that has been turned over to the state to collect, they call!  They handle some debt collections as well sadly. They probably don't care where you are either, they just want to collect. And like all agency's, they are prone to mistakes as well.

However, with all the scam ops out there, it would be advisable to call the listed number(s) on the web site which is this number.

Get a grip on it and kindly use another ID rather then my shortened one thank you. Wolfie doesn't live in Or, but I do. This does not mean that they don't make mistakes in calling folks elsewhere. Its entirely possible for scammers to fake a government entity and they do even down to using their phone numbers and ID. One only has to look at the IRS scams ongoing.

ROT, when in doubt, you call the numbers listed on the government web site which is this number.

They're probably following up on an Oregon parking ticket. That's what mine was.

Did you get a parking ticket in Portland? I totally agree with you that they should contact by mail... they called me too. They started by asking for my full social, address, name, etc. Then they wanted to get a payment over the phone! I had already arranged a payment plan and they sent me ticket stubs to send in with checks. However, I moved and they are packed away. I missed two months and that is why they called again. The agent on the phone said to google the phone number and that I would see it is for "Other Agencies" for the Oregon Dept of Revenue. It is legit, but I still refused to give my cc info over the phone and told him to send me new ticket stubs for payment.

He asked for my social, name, and address. Since I just mailed my tex return to the IRS, I thought this call was valid.
After I realized this could be a scam, I hung up.
I feel like a fool. Now I'm worried about identity theft. Please contact me.

I too just had a message from the department of revenue and left a message saying it was important that I give them a call back. I saved the voice mail and am not sure what I am going to do with it yet...any suggestions?

"any suggestions"? Yes. Call the Department of Revenue @ a known phone number - not this one! - and ask if they called you. You can visit their official website to find their phone number.

Definitely not the IRS.  The IRS wouldn't ask your for you social, because they'd already have your phone number linked to it and therefore would know it was you when you rang them.
