How can I verify whether or not a debt collector is legitimate?
Here are a few warning signs that could signal a debt collection scam:

The debt collector threatens you. Legitimate debt collectors probably won't claim that they'll have you arrested or claim that they or their employees are law enforcement officers.

The debt collector refuses to give you information about your debt or is trying to collect a debt you do not recognize. You have certain rights to ask a debt collector to verify the debt. You can use this sample letter to request this information. Ask for an explanation in writing before you pay.

The debt collector refuses to give you a mailing address or phone number.

The debt collector asks you for sensitive personal financial information. You should never provide anyone with your personal financial information unless you are sure they're legitimate.
If you think that a caller may be a fake debt collector:

Ask the caller for his or her name, company, street address, telephone number, and professional license number. Many states require debt collectors to be licensed. Check the information the caller provides you with your state officials, or the state in which the debt collector holds a license. If the caller refuses or is unable to provide you with information about his company, or if you can’t verify the information he provides, do not give money to the caller or company.

Tell the caller that you refuse to discuss any debt until you get a written "validation notice." This notice must include:
    The amount of the debt
The name of the creditor you owe
A description of certain rights under the federal Fair Debt Collection Practices Act
If a caller refuses to give you all of this information, consider requesting this information in writing or seeking assistance before paying the debt to make sure the debt, and the company, are valid.

Tip: You can consider sending the collector a letter requesting the information by using one of the CFPB's sample letters. You can also submit a complaint to the CFPB or you can contact your state Attorney General’s office.

Do not give the caller personal financial or other sensitive information. Never give out or confirm personal financial or other sensitive information like your bank account, credit card, or Social Security number unless you know the company or person you are talking with is a real debt collector. Scam artists, like fake debt collectors, can use your information to commit identity theft such as:
    Charging your existing credit cards
Opening new credit card or checking accounts
    Writing fraudulent checks
Taking out loans in your name

Contact your creditor. If the debt is legitimate – but you think the collector may not be – contact your creditor about the calls. Share the information you have about the suspicious calls and find out who, if anyone, the creditor has authorized to collect the debt.

Report the call. Submit a complaint with the CFPB or get in touch with your state Attorney General's office with information about suspicious callers.

Stop speaking with the caller. If nothing else works and you believe the calls are fraudulent, send a letter demanding that the caller stop contacting you, and keep a copy for your files.

Tip: You can use this sample letter to write a letter demanding the debt collector stop contacting you. By law, real debt collectors must stop calling you if you ask them to in writing.

Tip: If you're having trouble with debt collection, you can submit a complaint with the CFPB online or by calling (855) 411-CFPB (2372).

They claim they are serving me. Calls themselves cbb services and also cbb financial group?  I do not no if their legitimate they said fax them for a business licence for proof that's fishy. claim they bought a us bank debt that's from 2007 and off record its been so many years. If they are legit they are malpracticing. I had to change my bank account as they almost fooled me and they called today complaining the card was rejected by my bank as I await the consumer protection agency to validate them or not. I think this page gave ne my answer, but I cant help feel I am still going to be served would these scammers dare claim an illegal suit?????????  I'm going to call the bank back and tell them they attempted to charge my account without voice recorded authorization or sent in signed paperwork for the 8 month payment arrangemnets they tried to trick me into. They have made me feel foolish. I thought I was smarter than this. well will see if a summons really comes?
    appreciate advice myself.

These folks have been calling my business phone for years looking for this person who does not work for me and IS NOT ME. They will not give me a legitimate name and if you call them back and ask questions they hang up on you or your call goes to a voice mail that ask several  more questions.   They are all fake and they will never stop calling you no matter how many legitimate steps you take to have them to stop.  The FCC does nothing the to help along with the attorney general, unless you have information they know you can't get. Crooks are not going to give up information that would help them get caught. It just keeps going around and around. They keep passing your name to other scam agencies and they do the same after calling you so long.  I truly would like to move on with my life.   This has been going on for years.  As a company I do not want to change my business number.  I truly wish that there would be a SOLUTIONOFFERED by someone that would TRULY HELP!!!!!!!!

You obviously agree that the debt is yours, if your going to call the bank.  The financial industry customarily sells charged off debts to agencies when people refuse to pay their financial obligations.  Don't go on these no nonsense websites to complain about something you don't want to pay and blame these agencies for doing their job to legally collect on your financial obligation.  If you simply don't want to pay, that is your choice, just like these companies have a choice to call and collect on a debt you obviously owe.  Granted there are several unprofessional collection agencies, however there are some that are legit.  Yes, I know some of you readers may think I work for this company or a company like them.  The truth is I'm a professional DEBTOR.  I refuse to pay, but I let them know that and don't go on these dumb websites to bash these collections agencies about their so called harassing practices; because the truth is... they have every right to collect on them and YOU FEEL your being harassed because you don't want to pay or your just broke and can't pay. You may feel your being harassed for something you obviously owe, making yourself look like a real FOOL putting it on print.  So my advise if you don't want to pay... then don't pay but most importantly don't go and write your sorry, dead beat story online.

Have you tried locating them on the web or better business bureau?  If they are a legitimate company they should have left a number for you to call back. Try calling them to voice your concerns, if you don't like what you hear hang up.  People who go on these boards are people that don't want to deal with reality.  You got behind on your bills and now its time to pay the piper. As consumers you have many options to resolve them.  The fact of the matter is you owe money, if you want to take care of it you will.  If you don't them you ignore the calls and letters, possibly get sued because you refuse to face the matter. Collection companies get a default judgment and all of a sudden it's real. Wages are taken out of your paycheck, which isn't enough to pay the interest or fees on the judgment, it's on your credit report, they can even do bank levies to wipe out your bank account. I should know I was one of those people.  When I got a collection call, I would jump on these sites and just rip the collection agencies about contacting me, my friends, and family. Then I got served and didn't believe it.  I had a job that paid decent just to survive so I knew no judge would make me pay.  I was wrong.  Judgments stay for 10 years and even longer if the company is on top of their claims and renew the judgment.  I'm still trying to settle the claim with the Judgment Creditor but they won't settle for the amount I am willing to pay and by law they don't have to.  Now its not just a collection effort once the judgment is in place it's "Legalize Collection", nicely worded by my attorney.  So for people on here upset about a "phone call".  Call, if they are legit you will know, if you don't like what you hear, then as for an address or fax number, write a cease and desist letter then keep a log if they contact you again you can contact the Attorney General for assistance.
