- Al from St Louis| 2 repliesHappened to me about 5:15 pm 12.21.17. HP laptop. Possibly it was from a contest webpage. "not secure" About 3rd time in 2 months!!! Tried to copy pop up dialog box but kept going from dialog box to full page "emergency" and wanted me to hit "Escape full screen" button. I turned off computer each time. This time ran av programs, etc., but nothing new? If it happens to you don't hit any buttons. Just turn the power button off. If someone else knows better leave a message. Thanks!

- BigA replies to Al from St LouisIn most cases, you can use task manager to shut the browser down, and then you should also clear the cache and cookies. You should be using a browser that will not allow pop ups unless you accept them, block ads either on its own or with an ad on, and you should have Javascript and Flash turned off or only run with permission. You might want to also install Malwarebytes and/or SpyBot, both are free and work very well, although SpyBot is a little harder to use.
- MikeHuntleton replies to Al from St LouisIts a "Tech Support scam" Pop Up that you got from visiting a malicious website, an email or was tricked into downloading something that contained the Virus.
Here is a place that can help remove it:
https://malwaretips.com/blogs/remove-tech-support-scam-popups/
If it still pops up or the removal program does not find anything, it could be a replicating virus that re-installs itself on each system start up.
The virus is independent of your browser and only 'uses' it to activate the popup message in random website visits, generally from a list of 'keywords' programed in the virus app. Some of these are pretty well rooted into the Operating System files and require a Rootkit Removal program to thoroughly remove them. Its generally recommended to use more than one removal program to ensure it is removed.
I recommend these for insurance they are removed:
Norton Power Eraser:

Malwarebytes Anti-Rootkit
https://www.malwarebytes.com/antirootkit/ - LynnePretty much any program that threatens to shut down your computer or prevent access to your computer is a scam. It's a scare tactic.
