The caller from this unknown company claimed to be from our power company, Connecticut Light & Power (CL&P). They were supposedly offering a lower rate for their customers, due to competition from other utility companies, and a *$200 REBATE*, if we agreed to their supposedly offering us a lower rate of 7 cents per kilowatt. I live with my mother, who mistakenly took this call. She was asked for a recent meter reading from one of our bills, and gave out our account number. When it came time for the supposed authorization process, thankfully my mother hung up.
Knowing that this couldn't have been CL&P, I called them and explained the situation. I was told by their customer service department that the only immediate threat is that this unknown company could claim to be the supplier of our power on an upcoming bill. (Normally, this should read as "Standard Service") If this does occur, I was encouraged to report the situation to CL&P and the Public Utilities Regulatory Authority (800-382-4586).
Customer service at CL&P suggested calling this company back to request being removed from their list and to declare that any information given by us was without my authority. I tried doing this, and got a recording which did not identify who they were, and asked that the caller leave their name and number. Checking our caller ID, this supposed company did NOT give a name, just their number. If you receive such a call, DO NOT give out your information.

This number calls me all day, weekdays, weekend, day out night, fills up my answering machine with hang up calls...if you call it back you cannot get through

I received the very same message at my place of employment, which I found unusual, they also were representing a  Power usage and referred to CL&P, while on the phone I ran a scan of phone number and realized this was not from CL&P, and while she was insistant I get my bill and give her my bill info, I told her I was going to call CL&P and rerify this.  She said go ahead, and then I hung up.

This number just called and I never answer these 800 or 877 numbers.  The woman actually said a few things on the answering maching before hanging up.  "Hello, I hope you can hear me.... helo...." and that was about it and she hung up.
