A guy by the name of "John" called my ex wife of 18 years and said it was about a payday loan I owed.  Upon calling him back he claimed I owed some sort of payday loan in the amount of $300 and he knew some personal information about me.  I know the call is bogus and an attempt to scam me out money for a few reasons.  No one ever contacted me directly despite my living at the same address and having the same phone number (and it's listed in the white pages) and bank account during which time the supposed loan was granted.   And I am financially stable and not in the market for nor not previously in the market for any type of payday loan.  This is just an attempt to scam so beware!!!

Message left for me. Parts were pre-recorded other parts were of some lady leaving a message. Said they are trying to locate me and if I don't call back they will call all listed references. Lady sounded like she was almost screaming into phone attempting to sound threatening. Some sort of payday loan collection. Gave me another number to call back, different from what called. Automated calls are illegal now which is why this lady left parts of the message herself.

This number has been calling leaving prerecorded messages saying they are looking for me. If I do not call back they will contact references. I called and was told I took out a payday loan in December 2012. I told the man I never took out a payday loan. He said maybe it was before December 2012. I said no I didn't and I wanted information on this supposed loan I took out. He informed me I was the consumer and should have that paperwork. How do I have any paperwork for a loan I know nothing about? I asked for his name and company name so I could have my attorney contact them but he refused to give me any information. Instead he said the call was being terminated and he hung up on me. The scary part is that he had old bank account information and old email address. People will stop at nothing to scam others for money.

The problem with changing a number is that all numbers are recycled, so you have traded your problems to someone else and in the process have picked up your number's former owners problem.  This is why it is so very, very important to know your rights and the law in this matter.  Use this to educate yourself.

Federal law (FDCPA) requires them to send you a letter (US MAIL ONLY) within 5 days of their first contact
that contains their name, physical address, the creditor’s name, and the amount of the alleged debt.  It also must contains “mini-Miranda” telling you that it is an attempt to collect a debt and that all information will be used for those purposes.  The one other important thing that this letter must also have in it is that you have a right to dispute the debt within 30 days of receipt of the letter and if you do so, all collection activity must be stopped until the debt is verified.
Read up on your rights here, get template letters to send and also make a complaint at this government site:  http://www.consumerfinance.gov/

Also file a complaint with your State Attorney General's office.
