A company that buys and distributes your information over the internet including age, address, phone number, gender, marital status, race, education, and anything that would help telemarketers and identity thieves use your information. Who sells it to these people? State, county, and city governments strapped for cash because of taxcuts for the 1% and lenders who have your information from your loan applications. If your telephone number is unlisted, they don't care because you probably won't sue even when you find out where telemarketing schemes get your name and start reciting facts about you.

Total nonsense.  Yes, copies of public records are available to the public.  But they are not sold.  You do have to pay a fee to get a copy.    This has always been the case.  Most personal information is mined by companies who specialize in that sort of thing.  Also, any applications made on line, or even in brick and mortar institutions are often sold or distributed by unethical employees in data rich industries.   I will agree that privacy when it comes to personal information has pretty much disappeared.  But it's more an outgrowth of technology than anything else.

Who cares how they get info ...paid or not.  Let's line 'eM up and send them away.  Identity thieves don't belong in our society....
