I looked op the area code 877. This is a non-valid area code. It doesn't match any city or state within the US.

    877 is a valid area code-it is a toll free area code just like...800, 822, 833, 844, 855, 866, 888, 880–882, 883–887, and 889. Not all of them are currently in use, but 877 is.

Also FYI-  *67 does not work on toll free numbers-they can see your number.

Not sure when this message came through, but the caller identified herself as Regina with the same vague references to "The Department"  and threatening action.  She said that this message was someone with what sounded to me like a Vietnamese name plus a file number.  However, she spoke so fast I couldn't really make out the name.

Called my number asking for my daughter. Gave me a case number and said they were taking action. I called back and said they had wrong number and said it better be removed from calling  list. Said they needed case number I simply said do not call again.

Received a call from number '61-1300-451-361' The lady left a voicemail for a Travis, with a case number, requiring 'immediate action' left a call back number name for Maria Williams for 877-430-2722. Sounds like scammers, and the first two digits from the number that I received a call from look like a country code, for instance to call Europe from the U.S. you dial (011). So, curious who actually looks into these people. Maybe I should tell my local police department as well.

Got a phone call from them saying I have a 'malicious civil suit' from the department from a credit card. I called back just to see and they had my social and everything! Then they asked for my bank account or debit card number so we could settle the debt. I said no I'm calling my lawyer and hung up. I knew it was a scam when they said "you got a credit card, bought stuff from xxx store, never paid the debt, and now there are 2 pending malicious lawsuits". I actually did have a credit card from xxx store but 10 years ago and was written off. They were trying to scam me to pay so it would restart the write off. He also exaggerated like "oh you didn't receive the written letter from 30 days ago... oh that's bad! Let me see what I can do" and then took the amount owed in half and needed me to pay immediately. No thank you. They also called my work!

Just received a phone calling stating I owe a balance of 2000 on a gap card from 2008 When I asked for more information the "director" of the company said he knows how us Americans are always trying to run from our reponsibilities and that he can not even talk to me anymore and he'll just see me in court, then he hung up. When I called back To be like um excuse me I was just hung up on by the director the man on the phone said do you know who he is? - "He is a 35 year old veteran who did 2 tours in Iraq you should be thanking him for his services instead of speaking poorly about him."   -- um what? While I have plenty of respect for people who fight for this country I don't see why i a speaking about it with my debt collector?  Then he said that when he speaks to his attorney he will be sure to let him know that I " ripped him a new one" for 12 mins over the phone and that I made his blood pressure rise then he also hung up on me? Has to be a joke

    Yes.

Federal law (FDCPA) requires them to send you a letter (US MAIL ONLY) postmarked within 5 days of their first contact that contains their name, physical address, the creditor’s name, and the amount of the alleged debt.  It also must contains “mini-Miranda” telling you that it is an attempt to collect a debt and that all information will be used for those purposes.  The one other important thing that this letter must also have in it is that you have a right to dispute the debt within 30 days of receipt of the letter and if you do so, all collection activity must be stopped until the debt is verified.

Read up on your rights here and also make a complaint at this government site:  http://www.consumerfinance.gov/
