- ALDCalled saying they 'needed information on my whereabouts' and that they would call other people looking for me if I didn't call the office right away. Thankfully I didn't answer the call and this information was left on my VM. I've received it a few times this week.

- Ms. Sue them MFThe caller called my job and my phone shouting stating they were tracking me for a debt I had 7 years ago. I asked why it took them so long to call me if I owed them for a 300.00 online payday loan. The caller stated they had been sending me emails and they kept returning. She told me she was not sure why they had not called all the numbers they had for me. However, at this point they were moving forward with payment and providing with a back account number and place that was incorrect. I listed and told her that's not how debt collection goes. If you owe, you are not allowed to wait 7 yrs to pay.

My parents and roommate received similar calls. It's one thing to threaten me, but my friends and family? I've contacted a lawyer. - BigA replies to JCThey call family, friends, and neighbors to create panic and embarrassment so that their intended victim calls them and they can scare that person into paying their extortion money.
This is a common ploy by criminals masquerading as debt collectors who are attempting to extort money from people by scaring you into believing that you will be criminally charged, go to jail, lose your driver’s license, have wages garnished, be sued, and a variety of other variations on this, all for an alleged or nonexistent debt. One of the tricks they use is to call your work place, friends, or relatives repeatedly in an attempt to shame you into paying. They also use the “process server” ruse who calls and claims he is going to serve you, but then says you could avoid it by calling another number
Federal law (FDCPA) requires them to send you a letter (US MAIL ONLY) within 5 days of their first contact that contains their name, physical address, the creditor’s name, and the amount of the alleged debt. It also must contains “mini-Miranda” telling you that it is an attempt to collect a debt and that all information will be used for those purposes. The one other important thing that this letter must also have in it is that you have a right to dispute the debt within 30 days of receipt of the letter and if you do so, all collection activity must be stopped until the debt is verified.

List of State AG’s offices: http://consumerfraudreporting.org/stateattorneygenerallist.php - Hugh JassThey called and left VM, same, screaming lady who was looking for my ex husband. We have been divorced 15+ years and he doesn't have my phone number let alone live in the same state as me. I have only had my number for the last 6 years, so it does sound like a desperate attempt at phishing.
