Money laundering? You should see some of the stuff they've been accused of in that article!

If you talk to these people,  find out if they have the original loan.  They are trying to collect on a discharged debt.  I found a lawyer to deal with my 5++ y/old debts...

These guys are harassing my place of work. They have made legal threats. They lie about the law. Even if I decided to pay this debt, how could you trust that it actually gets settled? A friend of mine paid off a debt that some how ended up with another debt collector attempting to collect on the same debt. At the point these companies you shady tactics, they should be shutdown by the government.  

Well, this wasn't a 'Jason' ... it was a woman who began to leave a message then it stopped in the middle of her stuff, but the message began as another one did; stating that the message was for a Sandra W. and if I were not Sandra W., to hang up and not listen further.  Well, I'm not this person, but Calvary Portfolio has been calling my number now going on a year.  I've ignored them up to now because they never left messages before, and more importantly, because I have zero debt for over 12 years now (I had sold a house and paid everything off).  Now if I don't have the $$$ I don't buy stuff, so it's not going to be me because everything is paid.  Just lately though they have been leaving messages and its not for me (not surprised by that), but the message is really an oxymoron.  "hang up if your not this person, but if you are this person, then continue to listen" ... then they go into the amounts owed" by this person and for which companies (yes I listened because it is MY phone and MY voice mail and I'll be danged if they're going to tell me if I can listen to my own voice mail).  I googled the name they referenced and an Intel People Search site shows the last 5 digits to a previous phone number matches my current one.  Well it doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out it was mine.  Gonna give them a call and tell them to stop dictating whether or not I can listen to my own voice mail or not and to take the number off their calling list.  Ugh!

When he calls ask for two items in writing. Be nice but firm.
First written legal proof you owe the debt. Detailed information from your creditor
Second written legal proof they have the right to collect the debt. An assignment of the debt to them.
They probably have no proof to provide you and will try to discourage you from sticking to your demands.
Let them file an action and try to prove it to a judge. They most often can't prove either point.
If you are served FILE AN ANSWER WITHIN 20 DAYS. If you do you will probably not hear from them again.
If you don't you will have a judgement against you. your wadges could be garnished and accounts levied.
