- Alfalfa replies to carolineThe Federal Trade Commission (FTC), the nation's consumer protection agency, is warning consumers to be on the alert for scam artists posing as debt collectors. It may be hard to tell the difference between a legitimate debt collector and a fake one. Sometimes a fake collector may even have some of your personal information, like a bank account number. A caller may be a fake debt collector if he:
is seeking payment on a debt for a loan you do not recognize;
refuses to give you a mailing address or phone number;
asks you for personal financial or sensitive information; or
exerts high pressure to try to scare you into paying, such as threatening to have you arrested or to report you to a law enforcement agency.
If you think that a caller may be a fake debt collector:
Ask the caller for his name, company, street address, and telephone number. Tell the caller that you refuse to discuss any debt until you get a written "validation notice." The notice must include the amount of the debt, the name of the creditor you owe, and your rights under the federal Fair Debt Collection Practices Act.
If a caller refuses to give you all of this information, do not pay! Paying a fake debt collector will not always make them go away. They may make up another debt to try to get more money from you.
Stop speaking with the caller. If you have the caller's address, send a letter demanding that the caller stop contacting you, and keep a copy for your files. By law, real debt collectors must stop calling you if you ask them to in writing.
Do not give the caller personal financial or other sensitive information. Never give out or confirm personal financial or other sensitive information like your bank account, credit card, or Social Security number unless you know whom you're dealing with. Scam artists, like fake debt collectors, can use your information to commit identity theft – charging your existing credit cards, opening new credit card, checking, or savings accounts, writing fraudulent checks, or taking out loans in your name.
Contact your creditor. If the debt is legitimate – but you think the collector may not be – contact your creditor about the calls. Share the information you have about the suspicious calls and find out who, if anyone, the creditor has authorized to collect the debt.
Report the call. Contact the FTC and your state Attorney General's office with information about suspicious callers. Many states have their own debt collection laws in addition to the federal FDCPA. Your Attorney General's office can help you determine your rights under your state's law.>
http://www.ftc.gov/bcp/edu/pubs/consumer/alerts/alt076.shtm - KAREN B| 1 replyTHEY CALLED ME AND STATED I AM CURRENTLY IN LITIGATION AND HAVE TO PROVIDE MY ADDRESS TO BE SERVED. THEY COULD NOT GIVE ME ANY INFO BECAUSE THE RECORDS ARE SEALED. THEY GAVE ME A # AND WHEN I CALLED I SPOKE W/ MOLLY WHO SAID I NEED TO PAY $690 FOR A LOAN FROM 2009. I SAID CAN I HAVE SOMETHING IN WRITING TO SUPPORT THIS AND THEY DECLINED. I AM CONFUSED AND CONCERNED. WHY WOULD THEY NOT BE WILLING TO SEND PROOF. I WOULD BE HAPPY TO PAY.
- Just Received a Call replies to KAREN BIt's a scam and these folks are nothing but bottom feeders. Don't worry, if you had an unpaid debt from 2009, you would have already known about it. They just called our number stating that a claim had been filed against me. She wanted my address because she was retained by a company (which is bogus, no company by that name on the www). Even went as far as to give me a claim number. Wow! What a scam artist. Reporting this to the FTC.

- courtadminMy daughter got a call from these people saying they were going after her for fraud on an unpaid internet payday loan (which she never did). The person said her name was Meredith. They would not give her any infornmation except to say that they were going to serve her papers. She asked to get a copy of any bill or papers and they refused, saying she better pay.
Scam.- Call type: Debt collector
- court admin| 1 replyThis "company" calls itself "accurate" collectors. They are a scam. They do not give out ant proof of any such bills or debts and they try to get your current address, place of work and social security numbers to serve "papers" on you. But, if they were legitimate, they would already have those and would have served you by now. Make a complaint with the federal trade commission every time they call you.
- Caller: accurate collection
- SueCalled this number this morning and got a recording saying that the number is no longer in service. Wonder if they got caught!!!

They said it's in pre litigation and that I have already received notification of the debt. I don't have a clue who outback are or PDL ventures. I'm scared and they said this is my only chance to pay before I get. Served and I can pay 780 now or make payments. The guy was nice and sounded professional but unwilling to send me any kind of documents to prove the debt ;(
- Caller: accurate
- Amy replies to court adminDo they have to send you papers on the debt? They said they already originally did in 2009. I'm so scared I don't know what to do
