- Kyle| 35 repliesImportant phone call from IRS asking for SS#
- Caller: Internal Revenue Service
- BBD| 4 repliesThe IRS never asks for a SS# over the phone. Furthermore, when you call this number you hear a recording that states they will get to 'customers' as soon as possible. The IRS never refers to taxpayers as 'customers'. This is a scam. Do not respond to these types of calls.
- Caller: Who knows--it's an anonymous scam
- Ron D| 8 repliesIRS scammer
- Lin S. replies to Ron D| 7 repliesIs there a way to know for sure that this number is a scam?

This number is not one of the numbers given for assistance. If you owe taxes, penalties, backtaxes - the IRS will initiate contact you via USPS snail mail - they will not call you first. - K W| 2 repliesI got an automated call from this number today with a reference number , I called the number back and it said "Welcome to the IRS" and it sounded official.
- Caller: IRS
- JMLThanks all for taking time to post here; I won't be calling that number back
- SkJust got call at 11am and it showed up as "no caller id", "unknown". Was told to call back the number with the reference number from my voice mail. Waited awhile, looked up the number and came across this post and another one about this being a scam. So I thought let me call and see for sure if it is a scam, sure enough it starts off by saying please have reference number or your social number ready, then you get put on hold for 20 minutes, never spoke to any one. But did see something strange about this.. KW posted on the another site that this number is from the irs and that it's real. Funny that she's taking her time to post that this is a "real call" on every site you check this number on..... Makes you think.....
- Caller: No caller id "irs"
- Sk replies to K WOkay so you're taking your time to go and say that on every site you can when someone is researching if this number is a scam. You either gave your info to the scanners or you are part of the scam....
- Sk replies to ElspethWhen u call the irs they state in the recording before u push the button for option that you can visit there website. People please do not fall into this
- Melody| 2 repliesThanks to everyone who took the time to post about this - and thanks for the links to the numbers. I just got a call from a "private line", asking me to give a call back to this number. They gave a really long reference number. I suspect that if it really was from the IRS, you would get the name of an individual to call and that they wouldn't have you in their computers by a reference number but by a tax identification number or social security number.
Isn't this type of call illegal? - CLJust received a call from this number as well. People don't respond to this SCAM!!! Call your local TV company and report it to them so we can get these POS ScAMMERS shut down!!!
- Caller: IRS

- CWG40 replies to K WIRS never initiates contacts by phone. They use US mail only. This is a scam. What part of the word "scam" do you NOT understand?
- CWG40 replies to MelodyThese are scam calls originating in India. This number is using a robo-introduction using American voiced actors. This is meant to throw you off. IRS never initiates contacts by phone and would never ask for SS or TIN#s over the phone, because all contacts would be by mail and if phone was involved it would refer to paperwork only. No numbers would be recited over the phone, except for control numbers which would be on the paperwork.
- tgjust received a blocked call saying I had to call the IRS back before 8 pm this evening, I did not answer but called back in a couple of minutes. On hold for 30 min. caller wanted my business tax number or ss # . I would not give and he told me to call back with it later, that without it he could no help me. NOT CALLING BACK. Called my cpa, told me it was a scam.
- stI received a call from the "IRS" from this number yesterday. I called back and after waiting 30 minutes a lady with a thick Indian accent immediately asked for my SS# or TIN# which I refused to give. Knowing it was a scam, I asked to have an appointment set up where I could meet face to face with an agent. The lady told me that they do not meet face to face. Really?
