- Karen| 3 repliesI received a call from a service stating my windows is at risk and windows has been shut down on my computer.
Is this a scam? - MikeHuntleton replies to KarenYes it most definitely is a scam! No one could possibly know about your computer unless you told them about it.
Message from Microsoft:Quote:Remember, Microsoft will never proactively reach out to you to provide unsolicited PC or technical support. Any communication we have with you must be initiated by you.
Cybercriminals often use publicly available phone directories, so they might know your name and other personal information when they call you. They might even guess what operating system you're using.
Once they've gained your trust, they might ask for your user name and password or ask you to go to a legitimate website (such as www.ammyy.com) to install Remote Access software that will let them access your computer to pretend to fix it. Once you do this, your computer and your personal information are vulnerable.
Do not trust unsolicited calls. Do not provide any personal information. Do not allow them access.

- B. Smith| 1 reply877 is a connection for WATS service and not an actual area code. This time they said they were "Windows Microsoft" and that none of my Microsoft connections would work unless I called them. NEVER call back such a number !!
- Caller: Microsoft
- Call type: Scam suspicion
- Mike-in-MD replies to B. SmithYou are wrong about the area code, 877 is a legitimate toll free code just like 800, 888, 866, 855 and 844, Now this number may be spoofed and just because 877 is a valid toll free area code does not make this number a legitimate one.

So my husband called back the number and they wanted the make and model of our home computer. He didn't give any in for he just hung up and called Microsoft and reported the number.
