Scam.  I was suspicious because 3 collection companies claim to be working for AT&T (an unpaid bill).  I requested Debt Validation by Certified Mail.  Got a Bogus form letter from Tupelo, Mississpippi 38801 said "as compliance to Section 809B" (?) with last 4 Digits of my SSN indicated as -0000, actual proof inc. statements from AT&T as required for proper validation.  I'll send them another Certified Letter stating insufficient proof, and report to FTC.

809B refers to the section of the FDCPA that covers validation of debt.  They are required to obtain that information from the original creditor and not from their records.  You didn't mention how old this alleged debt is.

Federal law (FDCPA) requires them to send you a letter (US MAIL ONLY) postmarked within 5 days of their first contact that contains their name, physical address, the creditor’s name, and the amount of the alleged debt.  It also must contains “mini-Miranda” telling you that it is an attempt to collect a debt and that all information will be used for those purposes.  The one other important thing that this letter must also have in it is that you have a right to dispute the debt within 30 days of receipt of the letter and if you do so, all collection activity must be stopped until the debt is verified.

Read up on your rights here and also make a complaint at this government site:  http://www.consumerfinance.gov/

Also file a complaint with your State Attorney General's office.

they're sending us letters in the mail a year after they said it would be reported to the credit bureau.  Now they are at it again.  they are a scam.  So glad they quit calling!! they can reach you by mail, they don't have actual bill info or Social Security # because it's a scam!! So many scams these days! We did have service with Direct TV as well as AT&T and it was so poor that we had to go back to Charter our original internet provider.

So, you threw away the letter that had all your rights printed on it and now they will have to assume that since you did not dispute the debt that it is actually yours?  That certainly was not very bright.  Your advice stinks by the way as you should never ignore mail sent by a debt collector.
