- Sasha| 3 repliesSame here. Just got a rude call from this number about security breach. An obvious scam.
- Call type: Scam suspicion
- ElaineReceived a robo call with an electronic woman's voice saying to call 1(888)236-6894. Due to a "security breach of software they installed on [my] computer.
What's puzzling is, I only got
a notification I had a voicemail on my phone around 10:30 pm. There was no record of any incoming call on my incoming call log. When I retrieved the message, the time stamp said 9:13am and voicemail said the call was from just 236-6894, and did not include the 888 toll free area code.
This is a scam for people to call back, and get tricked into disabling security features on your computer, and/or giving them remote access to take control. Either to steal identities, personal documents or files, or to trick people into giving out their credit card number. Criminals..- Caller: (888) 236-6894

- Aurora B.Robo call, apparently the “security software” “installed on my computer” “last year” had a “red flag.” So, whoever this is, admits to illegally hacking into my computer and installing malware. Cause I didn’t authorize diddly squat. I call shenanigans.

- Karen replies to YayaYeah, I just got this call too. When I actually have someone on the line I ask them "Which computer?" This one is a robo call with the computer generated voice - and annoyance in and of itself! - with the vague security breach of "software" they installed on my "computer". yada, yada, yada.
We're an office with at least 6 computers and a tech company that takes care of our computers too.
The only part I'm sad about is not having anyone's chain to yank as I ask them "Which computer?" - Mark replies to Sasha| 1 replyI have received this call three times on my home number. It has come at 5:14am and at 3:49pm. An obvious scam. Did not press 1. Might be charged a long distance fee.
- Nimrod replies to Mark
They called you, so they are the party charged any long-distance charges associated to the call, unless an operator preceded the call asking if you would accept a collect call (and I doubt that happened). Pressing "1" or any other key on your phone will not create a new call that you would have to pay for, it would only cause the call on their end to transfer from one terminal (the robo-dialer) to another terminal (an operator on their end). Even if, in some fantastically bizarre situation, that somehow involved some sort of toll or long-distance fee, it would be theirs to pay for. All your phone service provider would ever see is an incoming call, and that is what you will be charged for; which is usually nothing (unless you are on a cell phone plan that charges for connection minutes (incoming and outgoing) then you will pay for the minutes used, but not a long-distance charge).Quote:Might be charged a long distance fee.
You are probably thinking of scams where the callers try to get you to call back to a number in a Caribbean country where your outgoing call would be considered a long-distance call and you would be hit with a hefty per-minute fee. - theresaSame thing as all the above comments. I call all these unknown numbers the "crazy" people and never answer them. If ALL of us refused to answer, they would give up.!!!!!
