received a call from a local number but to call back to this number so she could get an address and place of business address.  If I didn't call back the law allows her to call my references.  She wanted this informed to process a claim against me

The caller said her name was Ms. Torres and it was in my best interest to contact her.  My thing is..if you already have my information..why would you need to verify?

Mrs. Woods called to verify my residence address and name of employer to process a claim against me. She stated the law allows them to contact my references. She said to call 888-315-3980 to speak with and "authorized" Alliance representative. So I called the county District Attorney fraud hotline instead.  Bit*h.

This is a common ploy by criminals attempting to extort money from people by scaring you into believing that you will be criminally charged, go to jail, lose your driver’s license, have wages garnished, etc. all for an alleged or nonexistent debt.
Federal law (FDCPA) requires them to send you a letter (US MAIL ONLY) within 5 days of their first contact that contains their name, physical address, the creditor’s name, and the amount of the alleged debt.  It also must contains “mini-Miranda” telling you that it is an attempt to collect a debt and that all information will be used for those purposes.  The one other important thing that this letter must also have in it is that you have a right to dispute the debt within 30 days receipt of the letter and if you do so, all collection activity must be stopped until the debt is verified.
Read up on your rights here, get template letters to send and also make a complaint at this government site:  http://www.consumerfinance.gov/
Also file a complaint with your State Attorney General's office.

Thank you for the info!  Who are these people?  I'm going to start messing with them when they call.  Looking forward to the next call now!

The law only allows them to call your "references" once in an attempt to locate you.  Since they know where you are and your phone number any attempt to contact anyone else would not be necessary.  What they will do it try to shame you into paying. We have information on at least one DC with the word Alliance in it, but without more information it will be hard to identify exactly who called you.  Your best bet would be to try to get the full company name and their address from them.  Then post it back in a reply to me and I will try to locate them and get all the information I can on them for you.

@ Susan, I'm getting the same calls, but I'm reluctant to call back....did you ever call back?  If not, what happened?  Did they keep calling.  Did you get served any paperwork?
