- DarnOh, God! I feel so stupid--
I'm a Mac user who was forced to switch to PCs because the office likes Microsoft's discounts. Anyhow, on a brand new device, a "security message" popped up (it's been ten years and simple things like blocking pop-ups etc. come difficultly when it's the middle of the night)
Basically it was a scam. Don't call any numbers (as I foolishly did so, and wound up feeling unsafe.) Guy said he was based in NY area (weird considering it would have been quite early in the morning if he had called from NY actually). He was Indian, presumably living in India (outsourced CC).- Caller: Yoda Care
- LSLI just had the same thing happen. I couldn't get out of it so I called number and as soon as I asked who I was speaking with he hung up. I finally got out and ran a scam threat on my computer. all seems ok>
- leelee| 1 replyJust got a popup window that wouldn't go away until I logged off the system. This number was the number to call for assistance. Of course it's a scam. Don't know how it is that I couldn't click out of the window.
- Joseph McCord| 1 replyWhile using my iMac I got a pop up warning of malware and saying to call this number. Now my iMac is not working - I cannot get the Pop up to go away and my computer is not working.
- Mike. replies to leeleeOpen task manager and click End Task wherever you see your browser or the fake alert. Do this as many times as it takes, it'll go away without having to restart.
- Pico| 1 replyLike others on this string, I was instructed in a pop-up window in Safari to call this 888 number (no one called me). I called and only had to ask a few questions (e.g., what's your company?) before a man with an Indian accent hung-up. I quit Safari and other apps, rebooted, and the window was gone. What bothers me is that this pop-up landed on my laptop after I clicked on a Google alert, the kind I get all the time. I thought Google would have screened-out this kind of malware scam.
- Carolyn O'RourkePoped up on my Mac. Can't these people be stopped!
- ColinSame thing happened to me but a different number called backed cause I hung up as soon as the man answered it is a man with an Indian accent don't call it and if the 888-786-7759 calls back don't answer
- Unica| 1 replyPop up popped up and said to call after my son was playing games. I called and they said there would be a charge and I was talking to a Microsoft tech. After I said I couldn't afford to pay anything at the moment she hung up immediately.
- same thing replies to UnicaGot this on my MAC!!!! Deleted cookies, shut down. Upon restart- called number with *67 as a prefix (when u dial this this 1st b4 u dial # it blocks your phone #)---reapeatedly. Got same guy every time. He asked me if I was a windows user immediately (I didn't tell I had a MAC!!!). I told him I was from FBI!! and knew where he was. He laughed and hung up. Oh… By the way---don't know if this is relevant or not, but I then found an app in my apps folder-a folder named COUPONS!? I don't use !#$&ING COUPONS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
- Apple Care will help you for freeTotal scam. The warning message just didn't look right to me, so I called the number, but with a skeptical, somewhat aggressive attitude. Not surprisingly, the person who answered was clearly in a call center somewhere in India. He said he worked for "Technical Support". I pressed "Tech Support for WHAT COMPANY?". Eventually he said "Uber Technologies. We do support for Microsoft and Apple." Oh man. If you're going to run a scam, at least come up with a story that is remotely feasible. Uber? Gimme a break.
SOLUTION: I hung up, called Apple Care and they got me past the message by having me force quit Safari, turn off my wifi, open safari, and close all Safari windows. Then turn Wifi back on and open safari. Then she sent me a link to a free malware detection application. I ran that, and sure enough, I had malware. Something called Spigot. We removed it.
So now it was verified. They put this malware on my computer and had me call them, presumably to pay them to fix it. I called the scammers back. When someone answered (different person) I asked "Tech support for what company?" He said "Microsoft." I said, "So you are an employee of Microsoft?" He said Yes. I said, "But I have a Mac. Why am I speaking with Microsoft." He offered to transfer me to one of their Apple Support reps. I laughed...Yeah, Microsoft employees people to support Apple products. Apple and Microsoft have joined forces...that's quite the merger. Surprised that wasn't in the news. Puh-lease. He said, "No, I'm transferring you to Apple." I said, "I just got off the phone with Apple. They fixed my problem and confirmed that you are a scam artist." He kept trying to transfer me to his Apple rep. I blasted the guy for being an idiot who wouldn't be hired to clean the floors at Microsoft, much less do technical support. He hung up. - jay seeon internet lap top warning from ao7relxnib.traffikwize.net
