- plcontacted RE; credit card fraud
- Caller: Sun Trust Fraud Dept.
- PSC replies to tide| 1 replyGot a letter written on FAKE SunTrust stationary with matching envelope saying there was suspicious activity on my card. They knew our name, address and had the last 4 digits of our card, so at first I didn't even think about it being a scam. But, being the paranoid person that I am, I called SunTrust. Good thing, because I was told that this phone number definitely isn't one of theirs. You can also go to the SunTrust website and see that this number is NOT listed anywhere in their fraud section (or anywhere else on the site). Good Luck to All
- CWG40About 151 calls on this thread and I count 97 or about 64 percent , as shill posts. The shillers basically posting to tell everyone how "legit" this number is.
This number is most likely part of a larger fraud campaign targeting the customers of large-scale financial or commercial institutions.
The large number of phony posts claiming the call is real, is evidence of con artists spamming the site to try to fool people. At a 40% shill rate, there should be no question that this is part of a scam. At least that's the way I see it based on my own research.
This scam is well documented. Simply google it out. Based on my research this scam has been going on since about 2008.
T hese type of calls follow a similar pattern. They all claim to be from groups like Chase, Citibank, Bank of America, Fifth Third Bank, US Bank, Wells Fargo, RBC, PayPal, etc as well as Credit Unions. Or claim to be CC processors. Or “Fraud Detection”. All with the same type of postings. All claiming there is something wrong with your card or that some questionable purchase has been made. Or something similar. They all ask for personal or personal financial information.
Just part of the shillers criminal MO.
I've noticed the shill posters often use the same turns of phrase. Same old, same old verbiage telling everyone how "legit" the calls are.
Personally I think the group or groups posting this shillage-spillage are located in either the US or Canada, or perhaps both. They may also be working with scammers outside of North America.
In any event , never give out any personal or financial information to anyone who cold calls you. If there are any problems with your card, always call the number on the back of the card or the official number on the monthly statement you receive.
Call history on 800notes for this type of scam, so far. (That I’ve been able to find.)

- AneXus replies to givemeabreak| 2 repliesDefinitely Not from SunTrust, they would never call and ask for your entire card number.
- Chen| 1 replyThis IS the legit SunTrust Fraud Department, I went inside a SunTrust bank after my debit card got locked and this was the number they gave me. The lady from the bank used her phone to dial that number for me and helped me to get it unlocked.
- Howcome I replies to Chen
somehow don't believe that. If you knew who it was, then there would have been absolutely no reason for you to look up this number. - Joel replies to AneXus| 1 replyIt was from SunTrust and they only asked for last four digits,
- Kim replies to tideCall received from 888-494-0586 do belong to SunTrust Fraud Department. The representative did not ask me to verify anything except my billing address. He provided all other account details to me.
- Alice replies to Joelthey did ask for my entire card number and I refused.
- SalpI recieved a call from this number saying someone had charged fraud on my sun trust card.i called the number on my card instead and found out it was indeed checking up on a suspicious purchase from great britain that i made..so it is sun trust fraud calling you

- Joe LThis is the real outgoing number for SunTrust Fraud. I called them on the other number I have for them and verified. There should be a Call Type for "Valid" calls. The number to call for SunTrust Fraud if you don't want to take this call is 877-864-0197. If you don't take the call or call them back, they will put your account on hold.
- Caller: SunTrust
- No takerI never answer 888 calls. When I 888-494-0586 online with Bing it came up as a fraudulent
site. I will always check by my bank and verify any suspicious activity the day following
such calls. I just don't respond to 888 telephone marketing numbers.- Caller: Sun Trust fraud line?
- Call type: Telemarketer
- CK replies to tideIt is the real deal. I verified with my home bank office and it was the fraud department and they said I was the victim of a skimmer that then makes a replica of the card but was denied at a Home Depot in Tampa because it did not have a chip. I do not live in Tampa. These sub human fraudsters are all over Florida... I hope there is a special hell for them.
- Selene replies to SusanWrong, I verified and it is a fraud. I received it by mail and if they verify one of your transactions, that is the one that they took your last card digits. Going to post office too to report this kind of letter, it is a mailing fraud.
- sweetiepie| 1 replyHow are people saying this is not a legit number? I've had to call it multiple times and just got a call from it earlier today after my debit card had been denied for suspicious activity. I called SunTrust directly to make sure and sure enough, they had put a hold on my account and tried to call to verify the activity. When I called in, they did NOT ask for my entire SSN or debit card #, only the last 4 of my social and the expiration and CSV code from my debit card. Definitely a legitimate SunTrust number.
- Caller: SunTrust
- Anonymous replies to sweetiepieScammers are likely SPOOFING this number. Then they PRETEND to be SunTrust and TRICK people into revealing their account info. Better known as PHISHING. When in doubt call back direct and don't give info to cold callers.

- Mark Jthey called and left a message. I listened to the message telling me that my card ending in **** was potentially hacked and I needed to call them. I called back and spoke to someone with a VERY heavy accent asking me for my complete name and card number. I told them the last 4 that they left on my message, but insisted I give them the complete number. I told them I didn't have a card with that number and if they called me and knew me by name, then they should be able to give me my information. Afterwards, hung up and think it's most probably a scam or phishing expedition. If I really wanted to go fishing...I would take my boat out....just sayin'
- Caller: Suntrust??
- Amanda| 1 replyGot a call from this number and I looked it up while the phone was still ringing. Some were saying scam, others saying it's legit from suntrust fraud. I called the number on the back of my debit card and spoke with Suntrust. They said there is no odd activity or notes on my account, we went through all charges. I gave them the number that called and they said it's not a number associated with Suntrust and to please ignore it.
- Kat replies to AmandaWhether this is a legitimate number for SunTrust or not is debateable. What ISN'T debateable is that scammers spoof phone numbers all the time so you should NEVER trust someone calling you asking for personal information, even if they appear to be someone you do business with. Instead, hang up and call a known number for that company, such as on the back of your card or statement.
