- CA gal| 1 replyReceived exact message (delivered in computer-generated voice and as written pop-up) as Catherine described above. This was the second time. I did not call number either time but am reporting this to whomever may be able to do something about it.
- Caller: "Microsoft"
- R replies to CatherineReceived virus warning and on-screen warning stating to call this number. Used caller ID block, but, he still had my phone number. He stated that he was with Microsoft, and that he could fix the problem for 199 dollars. Meanwhile, he is hacking into your computer. If you see this.. unplug your Internet connection. Control alt delete will not work fast enough, as he put up a pop up to block your view of screen. He will be in your computer while you are trying to figure the next step. Microsoft is aware, and says they have had many of these calls., and don't know how he is doing it. I think that it may be pop ups
- Tired of telemarketers and scammers replies to CA galThis type of phishing scam has been around for quite some time. I just got it again today browsing with Firefox, and just closed the tab. In a few prior occurrences, had to access task manager, and shut down Firefox entirely to get rid of this thing. Repeat, this is a SCAM, the error message is a bogus phishing hoax, and no damage has been done to your PC. Since I have Norton 360 for virus protection, it would have detected any intrusions, not Windows. Furthermore, Microsoft has stated that it does not send it's customers messages such as this, nor do they call you, which is another variant of the same scam. Just close the message, and run a security scan with your virus protection software just to be on the safe side. DO NOT CALL THIS NUMBER, and NEVER ALLOW ANYONE TO HAVE REMOTE ACCESS TO YOUR COMPUTER unless you initiate the call yourself with the company directly. Calling these numbers, and allowing them access results in the criminals installing malware, and trying to access personal info such as passwords, CC and banking information for the purposes of identity theft, and to access your bank account to steal your money. If you're ever in that situation, cut the power to your computer immediately (pull out the plug and battery), and also to your router. One last thing: check the verbiage in the error messages for spelling and grammatical errors. The message I got today contained several grammatical errors, and most likely was written by someone with a poor understanding of English. Dead giveaway!
